Hi all,I've been taking 1,sometimes 2 laxido sachets daily for the past 3 months and this has helped. My gastroenteritis has suggested swapping for prucalopride 1mg but this gives me all day stomach ache.My question is,is laxido safe to use daily long term?

My GP reckoned Laxido is OK to carry on using it, but it seemed to correlate with wind so I stopped. There seems to be generic advice in not using laxatives continuously but I haven't been able to find anything solid (i.e. peer-reviewed) at least for Senokot. Search e.g. Google Scholar for publications, but if Laxido helps you then you might be too worried.

My GP has recommended using it regularly. I’m 70 now and he says it’s better to prevent other problems occurring as a result of constipation. I have IBSc (as well as RA) and manage symptoms with diet and use of psyllium husk.

Hey Ladydaff1,

Yes I think so, put it this way, I'm never coming off it(!) - it changed my life. I tried prucolopride too and the other similar one and they gave me agonising pains too.. and my poo stank. No thanks to that.

I have bisacodyl (2 at bed time) and one sachet of macrogol at dinner time and another with breakfast. This combination has changed my 60yrs of hell with severe constipation, resulting in rectal prolapse in my 30's due to not getting any professional help.. and when I did took decades to get through to the right person ie a private gastro as I'd given up waiting for the "urgent" referral to NHS gastro as they are so so busy. she identified my issues are due to dysmotility and severe dryness in the bowel (and macrogol draws water in the bowel to actually allow it to move round instead of becoming cement pellets - or boulders!). These were due to my Sjogrens which is all about dehydration - which I have affecting my whole body.. so wondered if you have any issues with dry eyes, lady parts, skin, etc..?

Previously I was prescribed ruddy Fibogel with bisacodyl.. so that was like a huge boulder of fibre using up the little amount of water in my bowel I had (ie not much) and then the bisacodyl dynamite pushing the boulder round my intestines.. all night.. so hours and hours of utter agony. So if anyone else reading this recognises that symptom and is on the same stuff as that, have a chat with your gastro - or gp. I spoke to another gp after I'd got the right advice via the very knowledgable private gastro and told her about the hell of my years on the bisacodyl and fibogel - and she said "oh yes, if you have sjogrens or severe dehydration you shouldn't be prescribed fibogel". Yes, indeed.

And you can always find advice on things like your question on the web - there will be medical research papers and all sorts on everything you could wish for.. Just search "Macrogol medical research long term usage" or something.. should bring something up. But in the end, the pamphlet often advises on long term use etc.. and also you can ask your gastro or GP.

Anyway, a long answer from me.. but hope helps and others too..

All the best.

D

Hi DJ

I have been on 1 sachet Laxido for about 20 months now but can’t move things without an enema. Saw a frustrated Bowel Specialist in 22 who put me onto this regime and when I said I didn’t think it was working as it should i.e. I always had diarrhoea she seemed to think it was my fault that I wasn’t trying hard enough but advised that I should always take laxido otherwise I could block my very large diverticula. I’ve lost a lot of weight, over 2 stones, and feel much weaker than I did. Also I have very dry skin and dry eyes and am now wondering about Sjergrens as you mentioned. Like you the Fybogel I took first made things a whole lot worse and a proctogram was humiliating agony. I wondered how you manage things with Sjergrens syndrome?. I drink 2 litres water/herbal tea a day

Oh - and drink at least 2.5litres of water a day ie a large glass of water (not coffee etc!) every hour... and if you can stand them, sprinkle chia seeds on your breakfast as they form a jelly like substance around them and assist with moving out poo.. plus are full of omega 3 and antioxidants.. and are tasty.. but they get stuck in your teeth so you have to brush your teeth after breakie.. Apologies if you know all this.. x

Be careful of Chia seeds. They must be soaked first as I read that they can cause problems.

Hi there l have prolaspe and use cosmocol or movicol or laxido (macrogol) one sachet a day with main meal. I have been using it for a couple of years. I couldn't live without it. I would say yes it's ok to use. I have been told it's safe by a few medical professionals. It just adds water to your stools making them softer and easier to pass.

Hi there, I’ve been taking half a sachet of laxido for the past 8 years, due to issues with my sphincter muscle. I’ve seen several medical professionals and they’ve all said that it’s perfectly safe to take long-term.

In an ideal world I wouldn’t need to take Laxido, but sadly this is not an ideal world, so I just use whatever is available to improve my symptoms/pain.

Good luck to you!

Better to use laxido if it helps! It is very safe. I've just been starting on prucralopride and can't see any difference so far... Unfortunately, the only thing that helps for me is Senna or bisacodyl which are very aggressive treatments and they are not recommended long term...
