yes Laxido does that to me as well I have had IBS for about 30yrs,Used to be diarrhoea but now constipation.I have to keep changing what I take because my body gets use to the meds.Sometimes is Laxido Lactulose Senna or have bought syrup of figs that works for a little while.

I also have to use glycerine suppositories

It’s a horrible thing to have but I have learnt to control it sometimes.!!Dont like it to control my social life but sometimes I have no choice

I am experiencing exactly the same as yourself. Going to the toilet 6 or 7 times a day with nothing much to show for it. I had been managing fairly well for the last 2 years taking 2 magnesium citrates at night until about a month ago when things changed. So as well as the mag c tabs I started taking 20ml of milk of magnesia. Worked OK for a few days but now I'm having lots of pain & cramping & BM's ? as you have described. I'm at my wits end to know what to do next so can empathise with how you are feeling. I have tried Fybogel & Laxido they don' work for me.

hello Buggins55

I empathise - I have periods of constipation, up to 4 days and then I think I must do something - suppositories usually. But recently I tried Dulcolax picosulfate liquid - it worked fine and eased the discomfort totally. I understand that laxatives are not recommended for routine use.

Happy to chat in Private.

I've had luck with osmotic laxatives (i.e., they suck water into the colon, bulking up your stools, and making them easier to pass). These include polyethylene glycol (Miralax), methylcellulose, and calcium polycarbophil. Not sure what the brand names would be in the UK.

Yes. Second Miralax. Make sure you drink a lot of water.

I went to GP and advised mycrogel, I think something like 6 sachets a day (you can buy over the counter), for a week. Ended up in a&e with pain, and they suggested to keep going, adding in an enema 😱. This did help. Then I saw a dietician who advised on high fibre diet. I was hopeless with Fodmap. Eat 3 x day at regular times. Oats, linseeds, kiwi&fruit for breakfast. Stick to brown rice/ bread. Only 1 caffeinated beverage per day. 2 litres fluid. Advised on which Probiotics to take. Regular exercise. It has helped. I hope this helps x

Thanks it's sound advice I do all of that except (except perhaps the exercise the IBS has become so chronic not able to do much at present) and am trying to drink more can't have too much high fibre foods like beans as they cause a flare up! seems like you just can't win with IBS!

Exactly what my GP recommended!

omg I sympathise I am on a cruise at present to Eastern Mediterranean and my IBS is dominating my holiday and driving my wife mad - wake up with pain every morning - take a Microlax enema - gets rid of wind but no real bowel movement. No laxitives seem to work - was getting worse at home now it makes me want scream, most of the day I feel I am ready for b m but nothing happens so very reluctant to move far from the boat!

Oh bless you It seems so unfair doesn't it I hardly go anywhere at the moment it's got so chronic and the anxiety that comes with it is so severe that the mental health team here have taken me under their wing I do hope you can still enjoy your holiday as best you can

I can sympathise too. Travelled to Australia from UK. 24hr flight. Fine for 12 hours. Then diahorrea followed by passing mucus for 6 days. Ended up taking fybogel and ducolax which solved it after 48 hrs. Am OK now. It is like my bowels give up working and need kick starting back into action. I feel drained and it dominates the holiday. Same happened when we went to new Zealand 6 hrs ago.

I totally believe air travel affects the digestive system, something to do either air pressure I think, affects me every time, puts me off flying.

The cap is a measure cup ..be fore bed ..start with one measure…increase or decrease..as required..yes old fashioned but works ..👍🏻 have tried all fybrogel Laxido Movacal ..give me gas to much fibre..MM does the job

I tried Milk of Magnesia after reading on here that this helped. It did, but on trying to buy it again I cannot source it anywhere. No Pharmacies in my area can get it now and my local one tells me they’ve stopped production. I am in N.E. England. My sister also found it difficult to get in Kent. I am now trying Syrup of Figs bought on line which works fairly well.

what works best for me, and it doesn’t take much, but everyone’s different so you’ll just have to play around a littl bit with the dosage

Hi yes a lot of the laxative’s are not great for me , can’t handle fybogel and any of those powder things( just bloat me up), senna is like the devil, causing excruciating cramps, I agree with rubberpants3 ,sodium picosulphate is good, very gentle but effective, I don’t use often but it’s a godsend.

I’ve used many laxatives over the last few years due to IBS C .

My go to daily product is Now Magnesium Caps , effective , natural & affordable , available online from a variety of sources 👍

Dietary fibre cellulose helps me. I didn't get on with Psyllium (which is in Fybogel) since it made my tummy blow up like a football. However, worth giving it a try, since you might be OK with it. Further advice about constipation (including different products) below:

I have found that drinking more water has helped me. 500ml every morning before I get up from a flask of hot water that's made the night before so it is still warm.Another 500ml during the evening.

I have to avoid too much insoluble fibre as this gives me more pain and wind.

People keep mentioning enemas. Can you buy them over the counter? What are they called? Do they have instructions, as iv never done this before but have reached the point where I will try anything.

sg25 profile image
sg25 in reply toEdgar77

I was prescribed Microlax mini enemas which always work especially if you’ve been a few days without going. The only downside is that they leak a bit of fluid afterwards and can cause a bit of wind but when you’re desperate it’s a small price to pay!

I have been using Cosmocol for a number of years, it`s not a strong laxative but keeps your poo soft so it passes easier. I use one sachet and take part after each meal 3 times a day.

I find the same thing happens with Laxido backwards and forwards to the loo with little bits loads of times. I’ve tried 1 Senna some nights which works a little and recently was trying Milk of Magnesia which did work but I’m unable to find any Pharmacies selling it now. I got the last bottle my local chemist had and they tell me they can’t get it any more and think it’s stopped being made. I’m currently trying Syrup of Figs which is working a little and not too bad. I’ve never had an IBS diagnosis but my symptoms are exactly what everyone else on here describes. I do have Chronic Diverticulosis and colonoscopy showed multiple diverticula in sigmoid colon and further up too which doesn’t help. I’ve read with interest all the suggestions on here and might try something else. I suffer bad pain when going to loo and for a long time after. I’m never without an aching pain right along the front of my pelvic region and wake up every morning with abdominal pain. Does anyone else have this?

buggins55 profile image
buggins55 in reply toazaelea

That's interesting that you've experienced that as well, I'm going to try Milk of Magnesia tonight (after a couple of days break from other things) you can still get it on Amazon by the way I've also found that tummy massage helps a bit with pain

Zantecat profile image
Zantecat in reply toazaelea

That’s good that the fig thing helps, better to use natural things first ( I assume it is more natural I’m going to re-visit it), milk of magnesia is a traditional thing, I remember my mother giving it to me as a child, but I don’t think it should be used too much or too frequently.

Yes pain in morning, but for me that is because I probably never got to sleep because of it, so to wake up with it would be a luxury!🤔

Thanks, think I’ll get MM from Amazon. So many of us, we just have to battle on! Best wishes.
