Pepper Mint Oil Bad Reaction

Hello everyone,

about a week ago I was taken Buscopan Pepper Mint Oil tablets per recommendation by my GP in the pass, I’ve never had any problems with them, but suddenly it seems like my body is flat out rejecting them. I got this intense burning pain in my rectum with the sudden urgency to use the toilet, only to find out I had aggressively bad diarrhoea. So I call Sanofi (Company who owns Buscopan) and tell them and they say side effects are rare and to contact my GP which I did and they told me to stop taking them immediately.

So a week goes by and I decide to try Colpermin Pepper Mint Oil tablets and would you believe the same thing happened again. I can smell the Menthol strongly as well as the intense burning. Can anyone figure out as to why my body keeps flat out rejecting these tablets? I have nothing else to assist me with pain and diarrhea as my GP has literally done nothing to support me.

Thanks

I have heard peppermint oil can cause anal/ rectal burning, but I imagine it depends on who you are as to how bad it can get. I haven't tried peppermint oil, I just get 'an instinct' about it that it wouldn't suit me in a dosage like that, though I'm fine with the occasional strong (2-bags) peppermint tea.

All I can say is if it were me and I got those effects I'd stay away from those tablets. You have evidence they cause problems. Don't do as you're told just because a doctor thought it might be a good idea when you feel bad like that. Let the doc know why you stopped them.

Just really confused as to why I had the negative reaction. I’ve been using the tablets since the early 2010’ and had no problems.

It’s just my doctor has literally gutted all my medicines like my pain meds and they’ve put me on a low dose. If I reach out to 111 they pathetically recommend I take paracetamol and dioralyte and say there is nothing they can do to help.

Oh that's horrible! In pain and no medical help. I really feel for you. It's weird to suddenly react badly to the peppermint oil when you've not had issues before. Maybe the ingredients have changed? But I also think that we can change with IBS as time goes by.

A different GP might be more helpful....I don't know.

I wouldn’t know if the ingredients have changed. I bought pepper mint oil tablets from two brands. One was from Buscopan, and the other one was Colpermin. I got exactly the same reaction from both. I’ve reported this to Sanofi which owns Buscopan and is a pharmaceutical company and Colpermin took me to the Uk Gov website called the Yellow Card to report this.

It's good that you have reported it. It's possible they have made an ingredients change in some way, and the yellow card reports are important feedback.

I just wanna why my body isn’t breaking down the tablets or the menthol is leaking into my large intestines. I was able to tolerate it before, now my body just doesn’t like them.
