Amitriptyline for pain relief

Have been getting really bad lower bowel pain during a recent flare up, all usual meds, mebeverine, buscopan paracetamol and faithful heat pack, didn’t really help. Gp wants me to try low dose amitriptyline see if that helps. Just want to know if anyone else has tried it, did it help? Worried about side effects, but will give it a go if it stops the pain 🤞🏼

Low dose amitriptyline is the first line treatment for chronic IBS pain. I tried one pill and unfortunately it gave me heart palpitations during the night, so I couldn't continue with it. Not everyone will react the same way though. I am now on Linaclotide (for IBS-C only) which only acts locally in the gut. It reduced my pain by about 50% to 60%. After that I also introduced Alflorex probiotic, which has been studied for IBS. This reduced my pain to zero except when I am trying to introduce new foods.

Hi, do you know if Linaclotide is used for slow transit colon ?

I would have thought so. Best to ask your doctor/gastro.

I have IBS mainly D and Amitriptylene has been excellent for me although does make me a bit groggy sometimes in the morning. Although an anti-depressant it seems to be usedfor IBS-D mainly at low doseage i.e. 10 up to 30 mgs. Also Yoga and meditation are useful

as well as exercise of all kinds though walking seems as good as any. I'm careful what I eat

so very little or no processed foods, and if you eat bread stick to ones made with natural not commercial yeast( like sourdough) or flat breads seem Ok. I don't eat meat anymore but do eat fish and some seafood. Caffeine is bad but I still drink coffee sometimes not on an empty stomach and usually late morning and only cafetiere or in a coffeeshop. Even then it can give me the runs so am trying to cut it out as much as possible.

I’m afraid I’ve struggled to take it, I haven’t had an alcoholic drink for over 14 years, but I had a sharp reminder of what a terrible hangover felt like after taking these 😱But maybe that’s just me, meds affect different people in different ways. At least try it and see how you feel 👍
