Hi all, I’ve been lookin at some medications other than mebeverine, I’ve been on it for a short while now and it helps but really bad flare ups. A friend suggested talkin to doctor about amitriptyline as it helped them with ibs. Has anybody on here tried amitriptyline for ibs?

Hi, i tried it for about 6 months. It did not help me but it has a sedative side effect and that at least helped me get good sleep every night rather than be kept awake by symptoms. It is quite addictive so if I were you i'd consider one or 2 other treatments first but it does work for some people

It will help by drying out the bowel. Addictive and also may not look so good on your medical record for some things. If your thinking of becoming a pilot etc lol

Hi. I take Amitriptyline but was originally prescribed that for my anxiety. They did tell me it should also benefit IBS too. I also take Alverine and Loparimide specifically for my IBS, plus Psyllium Husk. All-in-all they all work well together to improve my IBS significantly, although I do have the odd flare-up still.

I take setraline for anxiety but wondered if I should swap, a trial, to see how I’d get on. Stopped takin omeprazole a few months ago and this has helped, I also take acidophilus as well as buscopan an loperamide when havin a flare up. Last week was great as I had 5 straight days with normal movement then back to alternate days, don’t know what happened but it’s a scunner! Been so many years with this it drains you.

Hi, yes, I was prescribed this for another condition and it made my IBS really bad with constant diahrea. Be careful of it. It doesn't suit everyone.

Hi, yes I had been using amitriptyline for a good few years and at first it did seem to help with my IBSD however more recently I noticed that the benefits were no longer present so I have switched to nortriptyline a few months ago, it seems to be working at the moment! I have also started to take Alflorex probiotics which have been really helpful too x

Hi BaneOfRagnar (Vikings reference?). I've been on amitriptyline and mebeverne for 8 months. It's worked wonders for me. But I've also followed the FODMAP diet and the thing that's helped me do much is cutting out onions leeks garlic and onion and garlic powder. I was in a bad place and now I have a new lease of life.

Hi Cornwallgirl, aye it is so, I hav a tattoo on my shoulder/ arm which is a combination of Viking & Celtic, the artist named the “bane of Ragnar”I tried a few different diets but hav found what’s ok one week isn’t always good the following week so it would seem to not matter what I eat. I think I’ll hav a word wi doc an see from there.

Amitriptyline is a very old antidepressant and a lot of people suffer from a lot of dry mouth issues. You should also take it at night. If you do try a probiotic such as Alflorex make sure you give it 4 weeks as they can take time to work....
