Doctors have me on this to treat my ibs, I’m worried as it’s an antidepressant? I’ve upper right quadrant pains for 20 years same place, same pain all the time, feel tired for days after a flare up. This may help some people, but I manage it by placing a firm object into my back below my ribs and lying on it, it doesn’t take the pain away but treats it like a referred pain, helps me a little to get through flare up. Endoscopy years ago showed some duodenum flare up, took biopsy no issue or concern from this. Apart from this I’m on the waiting list a second time to see a specialist until then they want me to try this medication! 🤔
amitriptyline?: Doctors have me on this to treat... - IBS Network
amitriptyline?
I’m on 20mg of amitriptyline for lower stomach pain, as I was diagnosed with visceral hypersensitivity associated with IBS. This dose is used to treat nerve pain. Much higher doses are used as an antidepressant (50mg to 150mg per day). It works to dampen down the nerve pain in my stomach and does help me with that symptom. I don’t think you need to worry about it if it helps alleviate your pain,
have you had your liver checked? I only ask as I had upper quadrant pain when I developed acute fatty liver of pregnancy. So the pain may not be related to your ibs, as this type of pain can also be related to liver problems
that’s good to know, maybe ask for them to be repeated just to make sure and double check there is nothing else aside from your ibs causing you pain. So sorry to hear that you have been in such pain for so long, the pains for me are also the worst symptom when the occur.
Could be your gall bladder
I have been on amitriptyline for the past 4 to 5 years and i find it very good for both pain and stress.
Don't worry amitriptyline is used for pain. I use it . Good luck x
I have similar, in the same area, but probably not as bad as your's sounds.
I've been on amitriptyline 10mg, and have been for over 10 years. The only way it seems to work for me is by helping me sleep or get back to sleep if I'm woken by pain or discomfort. I have sometimes cut the tablet in half and been able to manage on that for sometime till another flareup. However, the amitriptyline has given me Fundic polyps in my stomach which will probably mean that in the future I'll have to have vit B12 injections.
Yep, one of the long term side effects they don't seem to tell you about.
I have been on Amitriptaline for a couple of years. I have IBS and have had depression for many years. It has really helped my IBS and I do sleep better. It works for me.
