Has anyone had any serious side effects from omeprazole

Hi Bass20I only took it for 3 days and the heartburn I suffered was dreadful and lasted for about a week. I haven't taken it again. I don't know if that's classed as serious,but it made me feel ill as I have never suffered with heartburn before. I do hope you get some good replies that help you

I've been taking it for heartburn for a year and it works really well for that but I've now gone down with some other medical problems i think may be associated with it but my doctor thinks not even though they can't tell me what I do actually have I was just seeing if anyone else has suffered through taking it anyway thanks for your reply

I've not been diagnosed with ibs actually ive not been diagnosed with anything but I've now been off work for 20 weeks with severe diarrhoea and bleeding pains in my arms legs and back occasional headache and dizzy spells every test ive had comes back clear the only thing I take is omeprazole so I was trying to find out if anyone else had suffered anything similar as my doctor just shrugs it off if I mention it anyway thanks for replying

I had sickness, reflux etc with it. From what I know it’s the go to drug for digestive problems and GPs are happy to leave you on it forever. My GP switched me to esomeprazole which is much more expensive (which is why they rarely prescribe it) and it worked for me but it’s not something you should take forever (in my opinion). If your symptoms are bad reflux/sickness etc try silicol gel. It’s an over the counter medication so worth a shot before trying more drastic measures. Also KEEP pestering your GP. I’ve found they’re all fairly dismissive of digestive disorders and put it down to poor diet. So you need to maintain pressure on them to do something constructive. Best of luck.

I was prescribed omeprazole for acid reflux and it just didn’t agree with me, kicked off my IBS. My GP prescribed ranitidine instead which worked well and didn’t aggravate my IBS. I think they’ve since recalled it but there are other drugs in the ‘tidine’ family that could be prescribed instead. If you really think it’s the omeprazole not agreeing with you I’d try and be assertive with your GP and ask them to prescribe an alternative.

Omeprazol is evil and must die! Actually no, it can be very effective for some people. Just not for me and not for my father.After my former gp sent me for the wrong test - completely ignoring instructions from a specialist - I was put on it. I took it for a month and it was hellish. All my IBS symptoms got worse and I was crippled with pain, not a serious reaction but not pleasant. Turns out my father also had an unpleasant reaction to it, mostly stomach pain and it gave him a skin rash.

That said my friend and my elder brother had been on it for years and never had a negative reaction.

Honestly (and joking aside) all medicines have a risk of a negative reaction and there's no way to tell if you will until you take it.

Yes. It caused my IBS to get much worse and cause agonising cramps. It is good at stopping acid but it has evil side effects. I read that it also caused furring and hardening of the arteries. It should never be used for more than a month but doctors put people on it for years. In fact it was only passed for use as a short term treatment.

Yes I was on omeprazole for years ,it worked well as a proton pump inhibitor and controlled acid levels however it caused severe problems with my kidneys ( function reduced to 38% ) also my bone marrow stopped producing enough red blood cells leading to chronic anaemia which has also made me very poorly this is also due to the poor kidney function , apparently omeprazole is well known for causing kidney problems.I immediately stopped using this drug ,worked through the backlash of acid reflux and my kidney function is now at 57% . I also was not absorbing B12 so I am having bi monthly injections, the absorption problems unfortunately continue.

Thats very interesting as it started off i had really bad pains in my arm but its not a normal pain it feels deep in the bones then that spread in to my feet and lower legs i told the doctors this was not normal aces and pains but felt deep in the bone thanks for your reply

Hi Bass20 . Isn't it interesting how different we all are! I've been on Omeprazole for longer than I can remember (at least 20 years) for acid reflux and it works a treat. I only have to miss a dose and the problem returns. But I do have concerns about long term use and comments above increase them. I have had conflicting advice on this from different GP's. I suppose you're not on statins as well are you? In my opinion they cause more problems than they solve and I now refuse to take them.

No im not on anything else and yes they worked brilliant for the acid but with no other explanation for all the other things I have going on i have to think omeprazole is causing it even though my doctor waves away my concerns over it

I take omaperzole for really bad heart burn and it helps alot! notice if I don't take it for a few days I get an upset tummy, I think it makes me a little constipated at times.I've still not been diagnosed either but gluten caused me to have pains in my legs, body aches, diarrhea, headaches, not sleep well ect could it be a food that you are eating not the medication?

Thanks for your reply ive had test for allsorts and my diet has been ruled out as a cause I think at this moment my doctor is stumped as he even said I may have long covid even though ive had 2 covid tests both negative i cant understand the doctors reluctance to even consider omeprazole may be the cause as its the only thing i take

Omeprazole , like many drugs like Benzodiazepines I have been on since 1977 have not been really tested to its fullest degree, which is why I wait a while longer to get covid jab, as far too early to say what long term effects could pop up for a limited tested drug.

Omeprozele taken periodically is fine. I only take them when Im having a tea time chinese takeaway. (I have a small Hiatus Hernia) Long term use of it is not a good idea.

The one reason for that, it is A PPI (Proton pump inhibitor) decreases acid production. The facts have arisen a couple of years ago, that these reduce the level of nutrients, vitamins, and other complex parts of what we eat for good health that is absorbed into the blood stream.

WE need the acid, it is a primary working part of the digestive system. With me It kills any reflux from a chinese within 3 -4 hours before retiring to bed. I would suggest lowering how many you take. But having said that, good eating habits, regular times for meals & cutting down on junk food is paramount to keeping reflux down.....My Doctor from the 1980's gave me good advice. YOU should not eat anything after 7pm and drink plenty of water during day, and another glass of water before retiring. The odd small cup of tea is ok , but even then tea can give you acid if laying down soon afterwards.

Hi thanks for the information i think I'm going to stop taking them all together and just put up with the reflux as its no where near as bad as what I've got going on at the moment but thank you for taking the time to send a reply very informative

Try making some ginger tea with a slice of fresh ginger root and some lemon that certainly helps me

I have suffered from heartburn and reflux for years and thought that Lansoprazole would be wonderful until it triggered IBS. I now suck two Gaviscon Double Action instead before I lie down and that works a treat😊

Hi sorry for delay. Just be careful stopping omeprozele to quick. Reflux is not an awful feeling, but I have a hiatus hernia that means I try avoid foods that may cause reflux, especially not eating after 7pm. On occasions of foods such a Chinese, Ialways take 1 omerozele 1 hour before it arrives and by time it's time to bed, I don't get any reflux. Reflux can damage lungs and stomach lining, take advice before stopping med take care👍

I found they helped but when I stopped taking them the problem came back worse, what I believe was silent reflux, constant feeling of swelling and sore throat. I stopped drinking coffee and anything acidic for a bit and after about 6-8 weeks it got better. Apparently this is common and you need to stop taking it gradually but I wasn’t told that at the time. I also once took a double dose on recommendation of gp following bad chest pain and was in bed with the worst migraine all the next day.

I took Lansoprazole for reflux for three weeks and it triggered IBS for the first time in my life!! I will not go anywhere near it or other reflux meds ever again.

Hi I took omeprazole for about 10 years, and a couple of years ago was put on esomeprazole. Suffered from heartburn and acid reflux initially and now have a hiatus hernia and GP says unlikely I’ll be able to stop taking them. At no point have I been told to only take them for short periods. Have been concerned for last few years about serious long term side effects, but Gp and specialist say to keep taking as damage from not taking outweighs risks. I’m not convinced. Do believe it’s made my ibs worse, but no proof!

Bit late to the party here but my main side effects is ridiculous wind off Omeprazole ' burning sensation in my large colon under the rib area.......off Lansoprazole I have pins and needles and hands that go really dead during the night

Absolutely hate taking PPl but suffer from GERD......hoping to ween myself off Omeprazole in the near future and try manage with apple cider vinegar band probiotics

Yes I got changed to a different brand and suffered terrible side effects the main one being heart palpitations, also had weakness in one of my legs, I'd feel like my blood pressure with suddenly go up and it cause me headaches, I also had some numbness in my cheek and eye.

Thats very interesting thank you my pharmacy gives me different brands on occasions I did mention to my gp over a year ago that I sometimes felt quite sick when the brands were changed

My doc put me on Omeprozole following gall bladder removal. After a short while I started experiencing severe leg pains, as though I was constantly pulling muscles in my calves. I was hobbling everywhere. By chance I was walking past a neighbours house and he commented. Turns out he had experienced identical problems. I took his advice and went back to the doc who was sceptical but changed me on to Lansoperazole. Problem solved!!
