Hi, has anyone else had tummy pain whilst taking omeprazole?

Originally took it for some minor bloating which disappeared, now thinking it could be giving me horrible tummy pain all day.

That can be one of the side effects of Omeprazole. Check out the fact sheet for Omeprazole. I use it sparingly and only when required to settle the stomach again.

YES! Omeprazole have me agonising stomach pain. In fact I've tried other medications like this lansoprazole etc and they all do the same thing. There must be one common chemical ingredient in all of them that causes the pan. It's also a medication which shouldn't be given for more than 4 weeks and yet it's prescribed for years.

Thank you!

Both Omeprazole and Lansoprazole upset my gut greatly. The private dietician I saw told me that she thought my problems were due to lack of enough stomach acid rather than too much. Both medications are stomach acid inhibitors. She suggested digestive enzyme supplements and these helped and continue to do many years later. ( I certainly know if I’ve missed taking them a few hours after a meal). My problems got a lot worse after I’d had my Gall bladder removed. We are all individuals so I’m not suggesting anything other than talking to your GP about it.

I had the same problem until I realised that doctors assume that you have too much stomach acid and treat with stomach acid inhibitors when the real problem is too little stomach acid leading to imncomplete digestion. I take Betaine HCL with pepsin with any meal containing protein and it helps immensely.

Yes, I have had the same reaction. Stomach cramps. I stopped them straight away. To be honest, anything within a hard shell ie.capsules can cause me problems, so I avoid at all costs. Stupid idea to my mind for treating people with sensitive digestive systems. But then so is other gunk contained in ibs treatment. Fybogel contains aspartame, along with other dubious chemicals which can cause problems for some. Others have lactose in them.

And yet I have been taking Omeprazole for as many years as I can remember with no apparent side effects. If I miss a dose acid reflux returns the following night. I would much rather NOT be taking it but no alternatives seem to work.

It is a tough decision on taking this med for long term but if my husband had been on it for awhile he would not have had esophageal cancer. This medicine not only lowers the acid in your stomach it protects your esophagus from rupturing to Barrett’s Esophagus and then possibly cancer.

I had a terrible time on omeprazol! It caused me so much pain. I had a lot of pain anyway from ibs but I was miss diagnosed and prescribed it for gastritis.I took it for 5 weeks then refused to take it further because everything got worse.

Try coming off it (discuss with your gp first though obviously) and having a closer look at your diet. Once you've recorded your diet and symptoms for a while you might be able to spot what's causing the bloating.

Good luck x

I've been taking omeprazole for 18 months 7 months ago i had severe diarrhoea which has kept me off work ever since I've had cameras ct scans blood tests the works all came back clear a couple of months ago i had rectal bleeding which was ongoing. I did some research on omeprazole and realised its not as safe as it was made out to be its not for long term use ive now decided to stop so for 2 weeks ive not taken them and ive a marked improvement to the point I can return to work .

I now suffer from acid reflux but I can live with that my doctor still insists i go back on omeprazole even though its fairly obvious they were the cause of my problems
