Omeprazole and breathlessness?

wiserlady profile image
31 Replies

I was put on omeprazole for stomach ulcers/gerd/gastris (which no proof of them) and now have extreme breathlessness and lack of energy, can barely move across the room to put the kettle on etc - all of the information I can find online says it means you are allergic to it, and to stop taking it, but not how to stop the breathlessness/lack of energy otherwise! I CANT do any chores/housework, even getting washed or going upstairs is impossible without a lot of time , huffing and puffing and all the rest. My doctor has never heard of all this -and checked it was not my lungs which it isnt - it is not asthma etc, totally different.

Hi NOTHINGBUTPAIN76, I keep trying to get a message to you.

You popped up on a couple of posts recently and I had a look at your profile. You seem to be suffering a lot. I see in a recent post you wrote you said you can go several times in an hour. I am just wondering if this is diarrhoea. I was wondering if you have heard of BAM (Bile Acid Malabsorption). See link below to see if it resonates with you.

did stop taking it and did tell doctor, that doesnt change how it is - was hopingto hear from someone who had experienced something similar, where we could swap notes

I would regard breathlessness as serious. It might not have anything to do with medication. See your chemist Today. Bxx

wiserlady in reply toBatteria

living in the uk you cannot see a chemist now, and it was definitely becaue of the medication, it would not come on over night otherwise. ive now fixed it with stopping the medication and taking a medication that reversed what it did. obviously breathless is serious, you cannot function then.

If it was me I would stop taking them and see how you feel without them! But that's just me! I don't take anything I don't have to. It usually just makes things worse, one way or another, or should I say one end or the other!

did do, but the idea of the post was to hopefully hear from someone who had experienced a similar thing

Oh I see, perhaps someone will get back to you tomorrow. Hope you feel better soon though.

yes am better thanks, stopped taking it - only a fool wouldnt if it stops them breathing and having energy - and got a doctor to precise a medicine that reversed the harm it caused.

Stop taking it! It will take a couple of weeks to get back to normal. I took Omeprazole for a clue of years, it caused chronic , crippling stomach pain, lose of taste and was energy sapping. I did some deep research and read that it does nasty things to arteries. It was only passed for use for 40 days max because of the bad side effects. And yet doctors prescribe it widely for acid reflux and keep patients on it for years. STOP TAKING IT!

wiserlady in reply toCarlettejaque

thanks for the reply . i did stop taking it immediately. i had to, could barely breath or move. my doctor said he would arrange for someone to come over to take blood tests to check various function, but that was going to take a week or so, and i could not be that way for a week or so. i went to hospital where they did x rays and all the rest same day, and they said it had caused severe asthma, where my airways were so tight that is why if i used a normal asthma inhaler it had no effect, and why when the amb ulance gave me oxygene it would not go down into mylungs. they had to inject it all into me.

Good grief! That's a really bad reaction to the Omeprazole. Don't take any of the other PPI medicines either (they pretty much all end in the letters azole) as they all have very similar chemical ingredients. Why were you prescribed Omeprazole in the first place?

wiserlady profile image
wiserlady in reply toCarlettejaque

for stomach ache - suspected ulcers and gastritis due to lots of antibiotics and steroids for a long time

Carlettejaque profile image
Carlettejaque in reply towiserlady

Have you had a gastroscopy? That would confirm ulcers. It would also tell if you have Duodenitis, polyps or stomach errosion.Unfortunately, at present there's nothing that can control stomach acid other than over the counter meds which aren't very good. I used to get Zantac which were very good but they were recalled last year. I've just got a handful left then I'm in trouble. I have severe IBS and can't take things like Gaviscon or Rennies but you might be able to take them.

If you haven't had a gastroscopy, I would recommend you try and get your GP to refer you for one.

yes i know. have had stomach ulcers before and had those proceedures many times. and cannot travel twenty miles and wait months for that. its easier to try to do something quicker. i get on well with lansoprazole which is what i shold have been taking before, if its one of the iffy ones from doctor. and there are things that control stomach acid which are totally natural. apple cider vinegar, bicarbonate of soda and much more. ibs is caused by gut flora being all over the place and needing to be sorted out with the right biotics - i find dr mercola is one of the best. this was more about the urgent problem of not being able to breath and having no energy at all. i wasnt in a position to walk from one side or room to other let alone travel twenty miles.

Carlettejaque profile image
Carlettejaque in reply towiserlady

I'm surprised you could tolerate lansoprazole as its very similar to omeprazole. I cant take any of the PPI's. I used to rely on Zantac. I sympathise with not being able to travel. My IBS has prevented me from going any distance from my home. I even have to prepare in advance to go shopping. IBS and acid stomach seem to go hand in hand. Its all to do with gut flora. You seem to know what you can and can't take and as you are allergic to omeprazole just steer clear of anything with which has any of its ingredients.

wiserlady profile image
wiserlady in reply toCarlettejaque

had had lansoprazole years ago and was fine with it, with omeprazole and pantoprazole it was terrible - much worse - am sorry that your ibs prevents you from going far, but do get it - ive had times like that due to different health things, now because of asthma and fatigue/lack of energy, breathlessness... no good saying the doctors can sort it, have given them years to and still not done it. im taking a lot of extra biotics now to help the gut flora - especially important as on antibiotics and steroids at the moment plus the lansoprazole! so much more. otherwise when you come off the antibiotics you often have other problems you did not hve before. hope you feel good.

Carlettejaque profile image
Carlettejaque in reply towiserlady

I can't take lansoprazole because one of the ingredients in it, which is in all the others too, makes my IBS worse. I can only tolerate 7 foods. I eat the same thing every day. Its a very limited diet but its the only way to control the IBS. I am on steroids and Gabapentin for an immune skin condition. I've put on heaps of weight and have osteoporosis. I had a parathyroid tumour removed 5 years ago. It leached the calcium out of my bones and dumped it into my blood. Hence, the bone thinning. Spoke to a doctor today and they are referring me to a rheumatologist.......but a phone consult.

if only - three years ago i was back and forth to that hospital in an ambulance, each time they would have me there for A WEEK, giving me steroids and antibiotics, each time just laying around in a bed until the week was up and then sent home. being told to use inhalers, like i didnt know all that already.

I’ve read your post. I’m having same symptoms - breathless, nauseous/woozy (can’t even cook for my family), tired, headaches and muscle twitch above eyebrows. I’ve been on Omeprazole for just over 5 weeks to help reflux/indigestion symptoms. Spoke to my GP today who’s not heard of these side effects but says to stop the tablets and see if they get better. Stopped tablets as of today. How long since you stopped taking Omezrapole? How are your symptoms?

wiserlady in reply toBonniegirl_69

hi. was on pantoprazole for about three weeks and then omeprazole for one. the breathless started before. its as if it made my asthma far worse and the breathlessness and lack of energy are part of it. on saturday i was taken to hospital in ambulance because it was so bad, needed steroid shot so could breath and move properly, now prednisoline steroid tablets and inhalers long term again. its hard to say how i am now because they can make yuou feel much better, the rest test is when i stop taking the tablets and if i still feel better. the doctor said that my airways had closed up so much that was why my inhalers had stopped working for me and why i needed an injection/tablets instead. what happens when you try to cook for your family, it would be good to compare notes. what else is it interfering with? can you sleep? eat? how are you now? hope you are better.

Bonniegirl_69 profile image
Bonniegirl_69 in reply towiserlady

Hi. Sorry hadn’t realised you’d replied. I didn’t get a notification I don’t think. Oh wow you ended up in A&E?! That’s awful. Are you home now? Hope feeling better. Do the think it’s anything to do with the tablets ( they’d never admit to this I don’t think..) Do you think the Omezrapole caused your airways to close up?? My breathing is definitely not right. My asthma is usually mild and well controlled by preventer inhaler, never need to use my blue one! So it’s only been a couple of days since I stopped taking Omezrapole. So far not much difference. The muscle twitch above my eyes/brow is driving me insane. Not sure how this could be the tablets but I’ve never had this before. I’ve had eye test with optician who said no probs. As far as breathlessness, I can cook tea for my family and do housework but seem just to feel short of breath a lot and lack of energy. Going upstairs I get out of breath which is unusual for me. I’m 51 and fairly fit, don’t smoke, not overweight, don’t drink much caffeine, alcohol etc. vegetarian... Where do you live?

wiserlady profile image
wiserlady in reply toBonniegirl_69

I sometimes find people have posted but I did not get notification too. Never mind. We seem to be quite similar. The lack of energy and breathlessness with me started because of small squashed lungs where I cannot get much air into them. But what they wont explain and which does not make sense is that I can go for weeks or longer without a problem and then it happens. I went onto a tablet called monkeluast? and it helped a lot for a short time and then it was back to normal. ive been taken in hospital about 30 times with this problem. now I insist on being more in control and having rescue packs at home, otherwise at one stage I was going in for a week at a time about once a month! fine for them but im losing 25% of my life to being there. i was going to have to close down my business and lose my income and getting into debt. every time i was there i was just laying around in bed for a week taking inhalers and steroids and antibiotics which you can do at home. my guy does the housework and cooking etc now, with me it takes far too long or wears me out too much or both. how are you getting on now?

Bonniegirl_69 profile image
Bonniegirl_69

Hi. Again didn’t realise you’d replied sorry. So have you had any explanation why your lungs were doing that as a result of the Omezrapole? An allergic reaction? Maybe not good for anyone with asthma? How long were you taking the Omezrapole before you stopped? How long has it been since you stopped? I was taking every day for just over 5 weeks. It’s only been about 5 days since I stopped. I’m still not feeling right. Very tight chested like someone’s kneeling on my chest. Horrible. But thankfully not ended up in hospital like you!! I don’t know how long it takes for the tablet to be out of the system? Anyone know how long it takes to start feeling ‘normal’?..... Do you mind me asking how old you are? I’m 51. Hope you feel better soon!

Hello wiserlady I've been on omeprazole for years now I too get breathless especially at the moment I get really tired easily too which is not normal for me

I want to ask my dr for different medications as I saw a gp behind closed doors episode where a patient told his dr that he was worried about taking omeprazole as he seen a write up on them stating they could cause side effects such as kidney problems, cancers and premature death! This has put the fear of god into me

We trust the drs but dont always know the real side effects

I still get indigestion symptoms and bloating which is all uncomfortable like ibs

I hope that you talk to your dr about them you should not feel so poorly wiserlady

Take care hope u reply

Hi Wiserlady, it's been three years since you posted about Omeprazole causing you severe breathlessness and fatigue. I am suffering the EXACT same symptoms, I can make a cup of tea and then collapse back in my armchair gasping for breath, I can't walk 20 or 30 feet without being unable to take a deep enough breath without sitting down and catching my breath.I have Interstitial Lung Disease anyway caused by an autoimmune condition but it is under control, stable and even at its worse was never as bad as it currently is. I've been on chemo recently for breast cancer but my gut is telling me it's not the chemo.

I have been searching through every forum and chat group looking for anything that might resonate, comparing symptoms against the medications I'm taking, treatments I'm given etc., and your post is the first one which I can honestly say feels like I've hit the jackpot!

I've been taking Omeprazole since January and since the beginning of February my breathing has become gradually worse. I've decided to stop taking it to see what happens but I saw in your thread that you were given another drug to counter the effects of what the Omeprazole dis to you. I wondered if you could tell me what that drug was?

Thanks so much ♡
