In short had Acid Reflux & IBS problems since Dec 19.
Had all tests including ultrasound on upper abdomen in Jan 20 & endoscopy Nov 20, all back fine.
Through all of this period and still on going I have a strange sensation / feeling under my right rib, it's not pain as such, hard to explain. Every doc i've spoken to including a GI consultant have just said "it's acid related" but not actually said what it is as such or could be, eg gas accumulation in bend in colon etc etc.
I've tried all sorts of things in general over the last 12 months to try help my symptoms ....Aloe Vera Juice, apple cider vinegar, I'm on 20mg omeprazole at the moment, I've cut out caffeine, milk etc , I'm fit and road cycle regularly, diet is good , non smoker
Just wondering if anyone out there has the same feeling / problem......just a constant niggle under the right rib area that occasionally gets in my head that it's something sinister inside me! I do suffer from very bad bouts of wind at times , but even have the niggling feeling on days when don't have any wind on that particular day.
Cheers

I can’t answer your specific question but can relate to suffering both acid reflux and IBS symptoms so I’m interested in this thread. I’m about to trial Zenflore- am also thinking everything points towards trialing low fodmap but I’ve tried before and it’s extreme- so hard to do without support from a dietician. Good luck with your mystery rib prob- what organs are directly underneath?
Gallbladder, liver & kidney & one of the main bends of the large colon.......but docs happy as had all tests and bk fine which is understandable......part of me just wishes for one last scan to ease my mind as I just think I'm 37 and now stuck with this feeling under my rib forever! Could be worse I guess
I’m experiencing exactly the same just had bloods taking before IBS diagnosed and recently have had pain under my right rib and also unexpected bruising on right side very similar to what I’m going through
Weird feeling isn't , looks like I'm stuck with it for life as docs pretty happy it's nothing serious........like I said it's not painful just a strange burning type sensation that comes and goes
I have no itch sensation but just a strange feeling right side.......I'm presuming it's just IBS related , I actually spoke face to face with a Gastro consultant in early Jan and because all tests earlier in the year fine then she said just be acid related.
So I guess need to trust the docs but I know how you feel re is it something sinister but unfortunately not much can do about it if have no red flag symptoms.
I think just take comfort that unfortunately millions have similar IBS problems which range over lots and lots of symptoms and last year's and years and the odds of it been something bad without any red flag symptoms is very low
It could be related to your gallbladder. You may not have gall stones, it may be a case of gall sand which is very tiny sand like stones. Very hard to disagnos with ultra sound scan or x ray. The greasy bacon & egg test is the best one for diagnosis. If the high fat content of the meal makes the sensation or pain worse then it is gall stones.Omeprazole (proton pump inhibitors) can also cause problems with IBS. They caused me agonising stomach aches. A lot of people seem to get bad reactions with it.
If you have IBS, stick to the low Fodmap diet and cut out all lactose and dairy.
Im male however my mum & sister both had gallbladder problems / removed in the past.
Yeah I've had mixed problems with all of the PPI I've tried......lansoprazole, pantaprazole, famotidine all had various side effects on me...... omeprazole seems to be best but do have this feeling still in ribs with it & occasionally acid / bad wind.
Think I'm just doomed , my mum has had GERD / IBS for 50 years & dad also has terrible IBS at times......guess I've done ok to get to 37 before any problems........I've had all tests but mainly over 12 months ago, apart from the endoscopy which was late Nov & guess got to trust the docs it's nothing sinister!
I've cut out lots of dairy, eat very healthy but yes maybe need to look at the low fodmap stuff.
A Healthy diet isn't healthy if it causes problems. Doctors dont seem to have much of a clue about IBS. I was told by a dietician not to eat any fruit even the ones allowed on the low fodmap as it is too acidic. Veg is okay but with IBS you should never eat garlic or onions of any kind, no fizzy drinks at all, no bananas, cauliflower, sprouts, peas, beans, lentils, seeds or broccoli. All of these cause irritation and masses of gas.Stick to carrots, green beans, spinach and bell peppers.
Had endoscopy November , all fine, no colonoscopy as no red flags for that.
Yep definitely , good old NHS at its best .....think I've just had every test apart from colonoscopy so they can rule anything bad out & just say it's Acid Reflux & IBS
Hi, I have had problems with my lower right rib area for almost 3 years now. I've had IBS since I was 18...I'm 52 now. The rib problem started with a constant dull ache that never seemed to go away with flare ups of Intense pain sometimes lasting 30secs sometimes lasting days, after a flare up i feel as though i have gone 10 rounds in a boxing ring for days afterwards, everything is so sore. I have plenty of wind too I also have the feeling when I bend I am squashing something inside, I've tried apple vinegar lowfod map diet etc but nothing takes it away. Over the last 2 yrs I have had ultrasounds, endoscopy, ct scan and a colonoscopy, like you all my results are clear. I feel mine is definately bowel related as sometimes when I pass wind I feel it move from there to down in my lower bowel. I've been on 30mg/day lanzoprazole for around 10yrs now if I stop taking it acid is horrendous. I take mebeverine twice a day too which takes the edge off.I've come to the conclusion like you it's something I'll have to live with as docs say there is nothing wrong which i"m glad about but it doesn't help when you are in pain. Stay safe x
I have some terribke bouts of wind so all I can think it could possibly be is wind accumulating in the bowel, mainly in the main bends.
Yeah sometimes depending how I sit like you it feels like I'm squashing something inside.
I may try Lansoprazole again once I've finished my latest course of Omeprazole, worth another go as havent tried Lansoprazole since Feb time last year.
Yeah a lot of it can be psychological unfortunately aswell , which I know is definitely one of my downfalls is thinking too much about it!
I too have had right ribcage pain/hepatic flexure discomfort. Almost like a tennis ball stuck there, and slight pins and needles sensation. (I have IBS and gastritis) I decided it must be referred pain from stomach, or trapped wind. I found an exercise to relieve this, and it helped! Just stand up straight, raise your arms straight up and stretch over to the left a few times. Worth a try.
I have the same tennis ball feeling, I am in 50s and was diagnosed with IBS in 2019 and this is one of the symptoms I had, I find it settles for a while then can flare up again. I will try your exercise, I was also put on Alverine citrate tablets which help.
Really glad just seen this post....i have been having the same feeling top right abdominal jus tucked behind the ribs like the top right square of the 6 pack...feelings a dull ache like a small burning needle sensation, not painful but u can feel it niggling away! I got diagnosed ibs last august jus got told change diet thats it...not been back since. I have thought could be a build up of wind on the colon bend, thought about liver so taking some milk thistle flush it see if does anything to rule it out but glad u got told its not serious eases my mind .
Tbf i changed diet in ways but some days i get symptoms of ibs even when i dont eat anything i shouldnt or il eat something i shouldnt and il be fine so god knows lol but i took dairy out and alot of gluten, chocolate seemed to give me the gurgliest of bellys and wind so took that out aswell. I only been on milk thistle 2 days so early days yet trial and error int it.
I`ve had a similar problem over the years, suffer with the normal IBS etc etc. Anyway was sent for an endoscopy , (I watched it on the monitor ) there was a slight sore area where the stomach empties into the bowel, test taken but not cancer so take the normal acid prevention to keep soreness down. What I did notice was that after cleaning the windows and stretching the feelings comes back, it feels a bit like a pulled muscle but it has been around for a long time so I cancelled that out. (at least it stops me from cleaning those windows and that`s my excuse) It`s been that long from the tests that if it was serious I would think it would have developed to something more nasty by now. I`m 76 years old now and like a lot of people have just had to learn to live with the ups and downs of intestinal problems because in general the problems seem to come from nowhere. Don`t drink alcohol at all now and that seems to help ( never drunk much anyway) I avoid all the really tasty foods that I used to enjoy but what can you do. Good luck but try not to worry too much because that certainly doesn`t help.
Omg i have something similar, I have IBS-C, i get a strange feeling under my right rib too. For me it’s more like a sudden stab that lasts for about a minute and then I’m good. i never thought to bring it up because I didn’t know what could be causing it. It doesn’t happen like everyday, no it’s very random, no pattern, and once I have it it comes back like way later.
Think unfortunately it's just one of the joys of IBS etc problems as can be so varied & the guts are so delicate......I'm thinking maybe just trapped gas or somehow acid related , but every Dr I've spoken to say don't worry it's nothing
Interestingly, I have many complaints that are like yours (acid reflux, IBS etc.) Did anyone have a close look at your gallbladder or connecting ducts for any small gallstones? I had similar symptoms for a long time before they increased in size and severity then became painful and then felt like stomach flue. I had other scans before the gallstones were discovered. The only other right sided complaint that has bothered me over time has been Costochondritis and pleurisy but both of those were quite painful from early in onset. You also didn’t say if you also had chest X-rays to check out your lungs as they can give right side complaints. I wouldn’t worry too much because serious problems will likely give more pain.
I had a chest x ray back in Jan 20, doesn't feel like chest to be honest, more inside.
Gallbladder was checked via ultrasound but again back in Jan 20, my mum & sister had gallbladder problems, both had it removed. Could be the start of problems like you said but Dr happy with all results and as I'm not in agony with my side they are happy which is understandable, also Covid outbreak hasn't helped.
Yeah I'd think if something worse I'd be in more pain etc, I can still cycle 25 miles 3 times a week for example, but it's just annoying & hangs in my mind a lot.
I keep telling myself the same thing surely if its serious the pain would be alot lot worse for me its just an annoying dull ache that gets into my mind of cud be sinister more than anything the anxiety side does me more damage than the pain lol and weirdly enough this morning my ache moved to the left side exact same place same feeling...so thinking cud be trapped gas or something as theoretically thats where both bends in colon are soo! Like u say if its serious wed sirely know about it ay.
Having had Ibs for about 30 years my symptoms changed yet again. I'm now getting right rib pain at the side. It has got to a stage now where it's daily and lasts for most of the day. The longer I have it the more painful it is. Today it moved towards the front if the ribs but manifested with pain in only 2 ribs. This pain lasted about 10 minutes. I'm now paranoid and scared to go to bed because I think the pain will flare up acutely.
I'm fed up with this ruling my life. I couldn't take a Zoom call from my grandchildren earlier due to the pain. We all need this damned thing to just go away... For good. 🤔
Alex, I don't know if this helps but had long term probs with pain on left side under ribs. Right hand pain could be gallstones?? I also suffer with trapped wind pain and only thing which helped was Charcoal tablets. I have an intolerance to dairy and gluten and a brilliy dietician(private) put me on FODMAP diet and other foods irritate my bowels too!! Had all tests like yourself and have a colon which has extra twists and turns so digestion is a problem. Would suggest dietician if all sinister symptoms clear. Hope this helps xx
Thinking could possibly be trapped wind , or yes the start of gallstones. Did have an ultrasound in Jan 20 which was clear but could be at the grainy stage.
I tried charcoal tabs but didn't work for me unfortunately.
Maybe a dietitian would be a good way forward for me if it starts to get progressively worse
I know the exact feeling!! I suffered with ibs-d for about two years..I was taking prescription Viberzi for a year and it (maybe along with cutting gluten) solved my issues. I still have issues with acid reflux and I don’t have the spasm feeling under my rib anymore or in my lower intestines..hope this helps you!!
With my research I discovered it may be an internal itch causing the spasms which in turn cause the ibs..anti histamines may be worth looking into as well!!!!!
Actually since around May time and ongoing now I started to suffer with a blocked nose on a night, varies from side to side, very strange, comes and goes .....docs just told me to use a spray as and when , so could maybe be allergy related so yes I'll deffo give some allergy tabs a go 👍
Same for few year now I get a pain comes and go on the right side I go to A&E everytime been for scans and blood tests it all come back OK but it don't stop me worrying I also icthy lot in that area
I’ve had this since September 2020, just woke up one day with this dull feeling under my right rib cage and it’s never budged - always there! I was diagnosed with IBS not long before, I never went to the doctors because it really wasn’t painful but recently I’ve started getting a clicking in that area too- do you get a weird ‘shifting’ sensation when you press down on the discomfort?
