I have a sliding hiatus hernia and suffer from bouts of IBS, dyspepsia etc as a result. For the 10 days I've had repeated episodes of severe painful burping as well as a burning gnawing feeling in my stomach. I've experienced similar episodes in the past. This time though I'm also experiencing pain and discomfort in the upper right abdominal area around and below the base of my right ribs. I've not experienced this before and wondered if its just related to my overall excessive burping or what. Any advice on this would be appreciated.

hi, sorry that you are going through all this. It sounds very painful. I am sorry I do not have any advice, but I am wondering if you are on any medication for this. Do you take omeprazole? Perhaps getting advice from your GP would help. Possibly you need an endoscopy to check the situation in your stomach again.
My immediate thought is gallstones I have IBS and to rule out anything else I had an ultrasound and it picked up I had gallstones and the pain is right under my ribs and the pain is awful.
I have a similar right side pain and burning/gnawing. I’m being told it’s likely my gallbladder but I’m not convinced with all my other painful internal issues. Personally I think it’s gas getting caught in my large intestine where it bends over on the right. I go in this week to talk to the surgeon that my GI doctor sent me to but I feel like they are rushing into wanting to remove my gallbladder without knowing for sure if that’s actually the problem. I’m going to ask them to rule out some other things first. But it’s hard to do when I get woken up with a really bad pain on that right side under the ribs. I do notice that I can often massage the pain away.
Hi! I have experienced the knawing and burning feelings and the burping. The Gastro said as these are new symptoms and I am at a certain age he advised a Gastroscope and CT scan with contrast. Waiting results. Suggest a checkup with your GP. Good luck🍀
Thanks everyone for your helpful and supportive comments, I forgot to add that I was already taking Omeprazole 10mg. Following submission of an econsult to my GP I am being referred to the Gastro Team for further investigation. In the meantime my Omeprazole has been increased to 40mg for 8 weeks. Hoping I'm going to be seen before the but with the NHS backlog who knows.
I do hope you can get to the bottom of your pain . Its just worrying when you don’t know what it is , isn’t it !
I just wanted to share my story as I have had something that sounds so similar . I had loads of investigations , colonoscopy, endoscopy, scans to look at my gallbladder, ovaries . In the end it was a process of elimination and the diagnosis is that it must be muscular/ skeletal ie muscle strain .
It has gone away basically after having had all these tests . Once I had had all these tests and stopped thinking about the pain it seemed to just go . Although I did have a diagnosis of IBS as well and am on mebervine so maybe that’s helped as well.
Anyway I just wanted to shared a positive that it was nothing sinister after loads of investigations. I hope you get a positive outcome xx
Have you had your gall bladder evaluation? It sounds like the symptoms I had for about a year, until I couldn't stand the pain under my right ribs anymore. I had gallstones. However, even though they removed my gall bladder, I still get that pain. I have been turned inside out and upside down with tests and no one can definitively tell me what's causing it. They say it's a symptom from my IBS. And I never know when I'm going to have a bad flareup.
I tend to agree with CBRgirl but if it's gallbladder complications do stop eating fatty foods - some nuts and cheese is OK. I know I've got gallstones but decided not to have the gallbladder out and have done OK with changing my diet to low fat and low fodmap. No guarantee this will last but has been mostly allright for 2 years.
So sorry I am very late in replying to your post about pain and discomfort in right rib area.I also have a sliding hernia and ibs.I have had a ct,ultrasound and blood tests. All clear except I have small cysts on my liver and kidneys. The consultant is not concerned about them.Have you found out what is causing the pain below your right rib?I hope you are now feeling better now.Kind regards.
