Hi readmeastory, I have very bad reflux, like you no burning as such but a sore and tingling throat and tongue, I have been on lanzaprozol for a long time, they calm the the acid in your stomach as far as I’m aware, I also have a hiatus hernia which doesn’t help I also take gaviscon through the day as needed, hope you get some answer soon, you are not alone with this, take care

Thanks for taking time to reply . Because of my other symptoms I’m always scared to take new meds . Especially when the doctor never seen my throat . Although saw the doctor before who gave me antibiotics then spray . But she referred me to the head and neck clinic . So seeing someone hopefully as long as it doesn’t get cancelled it’s on the 15 October So not to long .

Hi Cinmmy

I also suffer from acid reflux but I dont have heartburn and food rarely come back up into the mouth. What i do get is very bad tighness in upper middle abdominal just below the chest. Sometimes the pain radiates to the back.

I have been on one omeprazole 20mg since june this year but it was making me constipated so I have reduced it to 10mg which has resolved the constipation issue but acidity has become a bit worse.

How did you know that you had hiatus hernia? I am suspecting that might be the case for me. I am having endoscopy later this month

Endoscopy was what showed mine up, along with a couple of other things. I take omeprazole but not constantly. I am however finding I need to take it more often now to stop feelings of indigestion.

Thanks. That is helpful to know

What mg dose of omeprazole do you take? Do you have any side effect from omeprazole? I was told that omeprazole would only work if taken continously for 2 to 3 weeks

When you were diagnosed with hiatus hernia what treatment did you doctor prescribed?

I only take one tablet before breakfast, I think they are 20’s. It was the beginning of last year, Feb I think that I was diagnosed, before COVID happened anyway.

I was told to take them daily for 8 weeks. I don’t remember actually taking them for that long though. After that it was only when I felt I needed them, my doc knew what I was doing. I think a few people do the same from what I’ve heard. But I have also heard of some having been on them for decades non stop.

The only side effect I found was constipation, but even that got better after time and I’m pretty normal in that respect now.

I don’t have IBS now, but I used to and that’s the reason I still read this forum when posts come up in my email digest.

Thanks. I was on 20mg for 12 weeks and it also caused constipation but I have now reduced it to 10mg which has solved my constipation problem but it does not provide the same protection as 20mg. I usually get tightness (with varying intensity and pain) in the upper middle abdominal sometimes before eating when hungry or sometimes after eating if I ate something heavy to digest like red meat. Also get feeling that something is stuck in my throat when its clear.

Did you take sedation for endoscopy? I have not decided whether I should

Same as feelings I get then. What about trying 10 at beg and end of day?

For goodness sake take sedation, I didn’t and it was the most horrific day of my life.

Also, with constipation you need to drink a lot. I can’t be sure but I think they recommend that on the leaflet.

Ok. I think also thinking more towards taking sedation now.

I have been told to stop omeprazole completely for 2weeks before endoscopy which I don't think i can. But once endoscopy is done i might take one in morning and one in the evening

That’s so that they have a clear idea of your acid etc.

Just don’t eat anything that might be difficult to digest and only tiny bits at a time. 2 weeks will pass by in no time.

Best of luck. xx

Actually, omeprazole can cause the opposite in some people, and you can't predict it. But it's a pretty commonly used (and safe) proton pump inhibitor (PPI), which simply reduces the amount of acid in your stomach. The dose you've been given is also fairly standard, so it looks like the doctor is simply trying something which might work, but is not going to do you any harm if it doesn't.

Difficult to get face-to-face appointments with anyone these days, so it might be best to give omeprazole a shot - you can always blame me!

Thanks you made me smile saying I can blame you . I will give it a shot as need to try something . . And hopefully my hospital appointment won’t get cancelled .
