I was diagnosed with IBS at least 8 years ago, and possibly earlier than that I didn't really realise what it meant but I started to change my diet seriously by excluding, wheat, gluten, dairy and reducing my sugar intake. Despite this in the last year I have been waking up with serious cramps. Buscopan did nothing. More recently as I have had to take Omeprazole to manage other medication, I have had a bit of relief ... but just pacing it really. I have tried FODMAPS however, now I am looking at food as fuel and not enjoyment. Has anyone take Omeprazole long-term? I have only been on for a few weeks.

Omeprazole
I've been taking pantoprazole for at least 2 years, and ppi since 2012. I have no concerns. They were prescribed to reduce stomach acid getting into my lungs. I'll be on them for the foreseeable future. I also have a small hiatus hernia and ibs c&d at present I have bowel movement at least 10 times a day. Good luck
Hiya i've been on Omaprazol for several yrs now and will be on it for the rest of my life, its an Anti-Acid med, i was placed on this med since i had a Gastric Bypass in 2009, i'm also on several other meds which it doesn't seem to react with, i can't see that an Anti-Acid would help your IBS, but i spose every bodies body is different, if it works for you then that can only be a good thing, good luck xxx
bonsuite i took them several years ago and was fine then came off them then after a death in family stress caused problems and I started them again but they were giving me upset stomach this time (I did also have low b12,vid d and folate) so the doctor switched me to ranatidine which were ok for several months then just seemed to now work so well so now I'm on landsoprazole which are ok but I try only take as and when needed but I lasted a month without one and then suddenly got really bad pain in my stomach which took several days with anti acids to go and I still have it a little now.
I hate taking anti acids as they are bad for your body they effect your vitamins and minerals etc but if you have to take them you have to take them as sometimes acid can be worse or you could have ulcers etc.
Some people say the symptoms of low stomach acid are the same as too much acid but when I asked a doctor she just laughed in my face saying "people don't get low stomach acid, why do you think we're always giving out anti acids? "
Good luck anyway x
Yes I used to take omeprozole and I developed a serious allergy to the sun on it that bad I had to cover my legs, arms and hands in the summer. I'd blister in seconds on my hands and had to wear fingerless gloves it got that bad. I had to go to dermatology to get treatment which left me with dry skin on my legs which if you press looks like an 90 year olds! So I have to constantly moisturise them now. I took that drug for gastric reflux and now I just take settlers or pepac liquid cos I'd never want that sun allergy back. I still have slight allergy and intend to get my neck down covered in tattoos eventually to protect my skin and cover all the scars.(they work as my tattooed skin never reacts to the sun especially the black ones though obviously I use sunscreen too!) So I had bad experience with it myself.
I think that's a rare side effect or reaction though hopefully. Not pleasant to become a 'vampire'.
I can take Omeprazole without difficult if only taken as and when required. Recently I was advised to take a course of them -2 a day for a month. This made IBS worse and gave stomach cramps and urgent doses of D. Went back to doctor and was advised that Diahorea was not an uncommon side effect for some people. Switched to Rinitidine and problem resolved. Acid controlled and no bad effect on bowels.
Might be worth checking this out with your doctor.

My wife took for many years omepeazole. Since this cut your acid in the stomach and therefore the small intestinales have problems processing food. And in here case came out with sibo. Very complicated desease. Diarreas for years. Be careful with that antiácido for long term use.
I have had IBS all my life. I cannot take omeprazole or any of those drugs since after three days I get a lot of colon pain.
I stick to ranitidine or Gaviscon but don't always need it.
Hi I was on Lanzoprasol for many years and the side effects were horrible. Nausea dizziness and unable to go out in the sun except for short periods of time. I recently had to have C Cat scan because of the change in my bowel habits. Suspected tumour was the diagnosis. I went for pill camera test. Amazing how it works takes photos of your whole digestive tract. Any way test was negative. Good news. Because of all the tests had to come off the Lanzoprasol. No heart burn or reflux since December. So have now stopped taking them. IBS much better at the moment. Asked the bowel cancer specialist about this outcome and he said this can happen after bowel cleansing for both procedures. Not recommending bowel cleansing but am enjoying the benefits. Don't ever want to go back on the medication again.
