I am at present on omeprazole 20mg daily. I was prescribed this medication in early June 20 when I suffered from tighness of upper abdominal. Doctor said it could be due to over acid production. I took it for about 3.5 weeks then stopped it for 9 days and the acidity came back. So Doctor asked to start again and continue with omeprazole 20mg daily which I have now done for another 5weeks.
Since the symptoms have improved i was thinking of gradually reducing the dose to 10mg daily for a month and then maybe 10mg evey other day and see if I can come off it that way this time.
Would be interested to know if anyone has experience of gradually coming off omeprazole and if you had any symptoms in the process
Thanks

I was on Lansaprazol similar to Omeprazole end of 2019, was on on Ranitadine for 16 years before being changed over. I found the pains I had were worse radiating round the back. I stopped Lansaprazole in May this year. I have not taken one since. I did get bouts of pain but not as severe as when I was taking them. The pains get less and less so it does take a while for your body to adjust back to normal. I do watch what I eat, no fatty foods but I can eat all the foods I use to eat but in moderation. I eat plenty of fruit fibre breakfast drink 2 litres water a day and do not eat after 7pm. Doc still sent me for US which showed I have a tiny hernia and slightly swollen gall bladder. Had a MRCP a week ago to see if any gallstones and bile ducts not blocked. Waiting for results. I only take Gaviscon if I feel I have eaten a bit too much and when I go to bed. I hope I never have to take another lansaprazole as I feel they caused me more pain and problems over the years. Hope this helps you. You will experience some pains, try gaviscon. Good luck.
What were your symptoms for which you had to take Ranidatine/Lansaprozole ?
I just get a very tightness in the upper middle stomach as if its been filled with food or water even though I may have eaten very little. Omeprazole reduce this but on some days it just comes back despite the medication
DDid you get the US and MRCP under the NHS? I am still waiting for a date for my endoscopy. My GP asked for it on 17 July
I had acid reflux and a feeling of a lump in throat or chest and bloated. Ranitidine helped for quite a while but I started getting pains at stomach and round to back off and on for some time. Thats why I stopped the meds and GP decided time to find out why and sent me for a referral within 2 weeks which the GP can do . I have had those 2 tests within 4 weeks. Yes, I had all my tests done by NHS. Just waiting for MRCP results. If you feel bloated, try sipping boiled water, this really helps me, but it doesn't work for everyone. So many suffer different ways as you prob. notice with the comments on the forum. Wish you the best if luck. I will post if they find anything else from my MRCP
I take proton inhibitors whenever I need to take NSAIDs in order to protect my stomach, so I'm on and off them constantly. However, I do get a "rebound" effect when coming off Lansoprazole/Omeprazole because I think the body adjusts to the dose: when you reduce the dose, the body creates excess acid until it readjusts to the new regime. This is quite normal, and it just needs a little time to reach equilibrium; your plan to reduce in easy stages sounds very sensible.
I have been taking the 20 mg for four tears now and no problems. My doctor never said to stop it. Why do you want to stop taking when it is helping you?
