Coeliac Disease

Hi,

I have been following a gluten free diet for many months one. I recently had an endoscopy to show if I have coeliacs disease. It came back as positive.

The gastro enterologist said that the only way he could determine if I was a coeliac was if I was still eating it.

The endoscopy shows I have mild acid reflux, do these go hand in hand? Eating gluten when intolerant?

I have recently have spells when I have woken up and felt sick all day, which generally goes after 3-4 days. Is this gluten or acid reflux?

My Gp has out me on Lansoprazole and since taking this I have felt really bloated all the time

Has anyone had similar issues or offer any advice?

Thank you

Yes a is reflux can be a sign of I tolerance. A blood test determines coeliac. And you do need to be eating it for it to show up.Good luck.x.x

Hello, do you mean that you can taste acid in your mouth? Sounds like acid reflux.

How are you when you lay down? Does the acid worsen? You may need to elevate your bed to help stop most of the acid coming up. It can give you sore throat first thing.

I never knew an endoscopy can detect acid reflux? Yes, I have heard you need to be eating wheat before test. And blood test normally detect the disease.

Do you feel burning in your stomach area when you do eat gluten or wheat? Acid reflux can also make you feel nausea- ginger can help with that.

Hope you get better soon.

Hi, thank you for your reply.

My reflux doesn’t get any worse if I lay down or at an incline. The only real symptom I feel is nausea, but that can be something else at the same time. I have only started feeling heartburn/lump in throat since take PPIs.

I have felt some burning in my stomach. I normally would eat GF oats most days of the week. I’m giving these a miss to see if it makes much difference. Today, I feel a lot less bloated and the burning sensation has decreased somewhat.

I am taking omeprazole and gaviscon after every meal and once before bed.

I am worried about taking the drugs if I don’t really need too. I can’t seem to get a straight answer from a GP or GE!

It sounds to me that you have got the disease and that is what is giving you the “acid reflux “ problems: the burning in your stomach and that’s it’s irradiating your throat. It seems this is the reason the doctor thinks you have acid reflux as well? It doesn’t sound like acid reflux symptoms.

The endoscopy showed I had esophagitis. Mild acid reflux. There was no scaring or anything.

It also showed my stomach and duodenum were fine also. The biopsy showed inflammation due to coeliac disease so I guess I am still somehow ingesting it?

The symptoms I have now only came apparent a day or two of going out to eat mid aug.

I guess I will have to maybe clean my kitchen deeper to get rid of any source of gluten. Read people recommend you get new chopping boards and equipment etc. Seems a lot!

Yes, everything will need to be free of any wheat or gluten. Even gluten free products do have traces of wheat, so I’ve heard? It will take time to adjust to a new diet. Maybe take a look at some food ideas online? There are some great GF flour or there at the moment- quinoa is a good choice for me. Also, consider soft foods to ease your symptoms.

Thanks for the help.

I already have a few different types of GF flour.

Think the issue is other people in the house eat Gluten and we share all the same equipment.

Getting the ovens professionally cleaned today. So hopefully that sorts them. I will then clean everything else over the weekend.
