Low FODMAP and Food combining may help IBS

I have never been properly tested for IBS but a nurse at my GP surgery said she thought I had IBS and advised me to go on a low FODMAP diet. She also prescribed Mebeverine, to be taken 20 minutes before each meal. I followed her advice for 3 months but still suffered quite bad belly aches sometimes - although thankfully not diarrhoea! Then one day I ate chicken stew which had onions in it and probably barley and lentils too - which are all on the DO NOT EAT High FODMAP list - and I got a really bad belly ache and diarrhoea :-( That made me wonder just how much good the Mebeverine was doing?

So, against the advice of some on here, I stopped taking the Mebeverine over a week ago and made sure that I definitely did not eat any more foods containing High FODMAPS. And I started to feel a bit better.

Then I read that my back-to-back courses of antibiotics would have killed all the good bacteria in my gut too and that taking prebiotics might help regrow all the good bacteria. So I ordered 30 days' supply of Bimuno and started taking them every day - and I believe it may be helping.

Then, I thought I'd try the 'food combining' and I truly do feel MUCH better now :-) So I would suggest that everyone at least try it! After all, you have nothing to lose by doing so (it involves no expense whatsoever) and everything to gain if it works for you.

Thank you so much oldfog, then do you have the feeling of going again after the first poop and after your experience, does the Low fodmap foods help a lot in your tummy pain and pattern of stools or does it eliminate totally of your pain if you stick to the Low fodmap plan

I haven't had any diarrhoea or the feeling of having to keep going again - except when I have accidentally eaten High FODMAP foods! But as I said in my post, I believe that food combining plus never eating any High FODMAP foods/ingredients, has really helped me. I have not had any belly ache or bloating etc at all since taking the prebiotics and following both of these regimes together :-)

Yes, it's a nightmare having to check the ingredients of everything before I put it in my basket. And Gluten Free bread is very dry and cannot be folded over like normal bread. And Gluten and dairy Free foods are definitely much more expensive than their 'normal' equivalents :-/ But if it means the difference between living with or without pain and diarrhoea, then I am willing to go to all this effort and pay more for the privilege!
