Prescription for Fybogel but nervous to try it!

My IBS has been really bad recently (worry constantly about it). I’ve had enough of the constant tummy grumbling, wind, bloating and digestive system just constantly unhappy. I’ve recently changed GP and he has given me a prescription for Fybogel. I’m very nervous to take it as I’ve always believed that Fybogel is for constipation suffers, I go to the toilet every day but it’s small, soft, raggedy pieces (more like no.5 one the bristol stool chart) so I’m worried it will give me diarrhoea but he says it’s also a bulking agent?! Has anyone had any experience with Fybogel?

Don’t worry, I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve explained that Fybogel is not solely a laxative. It can help with constipation but is equally effective, for me, in controlling diarrhoea. It is a bulking agent, as your GP rightly says. It’s very gentle in its action and I think you’ll be delighted with the ‘regularising’ effect it can have.

In addition, it’s a natural product, rather than a harsh ‘chemical’. (I know, everything’s a chemical, even water!)

I’d be interested to know how you get on - but do try it!

Hi Fybogel is s bulking agent. I found it made nodifferenc to me. Ordinary oat bran is just as good and more pleasant! I put it on cornflakes etc. It does bulk up wll and help food traverse the colon, but yo can stillhave IBS episodes, it just helps day to day diarrhea to be more manageable. Good luck.

Would oats be the same as oat bran? I’ve introduced more oats ( overnight oats and oat cakes) but they made me worse ☹️.

Oh no, I don’t need wind or cramps that’s what I’m trying to get rid of 😲

Those same symptoms were the main problems for me too. The FODMAP worked for me so I'd recommend trying it if you haven't already. Good luck with everything!

I found fibogel very good - take with plenty of water and try a half packet first if you are nervous it should help. \Then you can progress to more if needed. Its a natural bulking agent so helps you poo more easily without small pellet effect.
