I got the above from my GP for diarrhoea which I occasionally get because of my IBS.What is puzzling me is the patient information leaflet says don't take for more than 48 hours but I often read on this forum of people taking it for a lot longer.Could anyone explain to me why the discrepancy?
Imodium Classic: I got the above from my GP for... - IBS Network
Imodium Classic
It was explained to me that the notes were for 'normal use' like holiday tummy whereas us IBS folk are in a different category. It doesn't go into the bloodstream so was ok for long term use. I was even recommended to take one a day to see how I got on. That didn't work as I found long term use reduced its effectiveness.
Is there a particular food group that gives you symptoms and have you tried leaving that out of your diet instead of taking medication
Hmmm. I'm on 2 a day minimum and often 6 a day with no apparent ill effects. I mentioned this to doc and he said its ok. "Its a very safe medicine".
I saw a tv program where this is also true of painkillers. There are people taking what would be lethal doses in someone else but with little impact on their pain. Don't really want to talk about dependence or you body getting used to medication, but there may be something in it.
Honestly I'm not to sure but I have been taking it longer than a year now
Thanks for all the replies,it is much appreciated.I've started to keep a food diary but I've not found anything in particular which triggers my IBS.I think mines is caused by stress and anxiety rather than a particular food although there are some things I know not to take e.g onions, too much food from the pig like boiled ham, spicy foods, greasy foods. They give me an upset stomach.
I personally cannot take it , it makes me worse then I was with bloating , pain and just bad stomach . it is not suppose to be used everyday. you need something else like xifaxin beware if drs who have no idea how to treat ibs. I finally found a good gastro dr who I like , I have LC and ibs so I am on budesonide, I was on xifaxin for awhile and it did help me.
