Magnesium for IBS-C

I have IBS-C! Big time C! It's been just shy of 2 wks since I've had a BM. Just a tiny nugget occasionally. I've been taking laxatives but still no result. I have taken Magnesium in the past and it works but it really bothers my stomach and I end up really nauseous. Does anyone else get ill taking Magnesium?

I have been diagnosed with slow transit constipation and before my surgery last year I used to take magnesium hydroxide, linzess 250 and 4 laxido a day. When I first took the magnesium it gave me really bad tummy cramps but I soon got used to it.

With much respect and please don't feel compelled to answer, but what type of surgery?

I was in and out of hospital for 2 years with volvolus causing bowel obstruction. I had major surgery last year to remove 1/3 of my large bowel as it was very long, loopy and floppy and kept twisting and folding. I had a severe under active thyroid which caused awful constipation for years which stretched my bowel. I had a shape marker test which diagnose slow transit constipation which means the nerves and muscles in my bowel don't work properly. Maybe you should ask for this test. I am a lot better now since my surgery but still take laxido and am gluten, dairy and soya free. Have you had any tests, cameras or scans? Hope you find something to help you soon.

No I think magnesium is the.best for constipation. You should take either citrate or oxide on an empty stomach before bed with lots of water. I would take quite a high dose initially about 1800 - 2200mg to clear you out and then about 800mg every night.

I take even 150 mg and I start cramping up. 300 mg and I'm ill and running to the toilet. 1800 mg? Perhaps I'm on a different type of magnesium.

I have started taking magnesium citrate once a day with main meal. Helps me to have a daily normal bm at the moment anyway. Also take mebeverine 20 mins before same meal. Only very recently dx with ibs C.

Hope this helps

i took phillips caplets for years and then it stopped working. i don't have trouble with magnesium. i now usually take magnesium citrate liquid and it usually always work. i have been trying ducolax gummies that seem to work. i drink warm water and lemon juice every morning. good luck.
