wondering if anyone has had luck with probiotics for IBS-C with abdominal pain at night. I am already taking Linaclotide daily in the morning and this has been helpful until recently. Now I often get abdominal discomfort, pain, and bloating at night. Not sure if probiotics would help or add to the problem! I had a postive SIBO breath test 2 years ago but I couldn’t handle the naturopath’s treatment, which consisted of oil of oregano capsules.
Thanks!

Sorry to hear it is affecting your sleep. I used to only get 4 hours a night as well. A low dose of Linoclotide - 72 much, helped with that but now I’m having trouble getting to sleep because of pain.
I used Biokult and it reduced times I visited the toilet. Regarding bloating I stopped bloating even before I used probiotics. Bloating comes back maybe if I had indigestion (usually from stress or eating late in my case) or ate some foods that will surely make me bloat.
At some point I thought I had UTC after taking a full dose of probiotics (Biokult) for 2 weeks. I went to the doctor for a test and nothing was found.
I just bought something called Bio-K. I think it’s different from what you mentioned, but I may try the one you suggested if this doesn’t work. The one I bought has 3 strains of probiotics.
I use Now Clinical GI probiotic, they were recommended by my nutritionist as I have IBS-C also , give them a try, I have tried many different ones & find these the most effective.
I also take Now Gastro Comfort capsules , they help with general tummy pain
I have IBS-C with night time visceral hypersensitivity (pain). This is controlled with Linaclotide, Alflorex probiotic and a high fibre diet. Both Linactlotide and Alforex help me greatly with the pain and I am now more tolerant to the extra fibre I need for the IBS-C. Linaclotide reduced my pain by 50% to 60% (note full pain alleviating effects take 10 weeks) and after a week on Alflorex, it reduced my pain to zero. I've been taking it daily for years. I still have food intolerances that can trigger the pain but I can eat a much wider diet now with Alflorex. It helps to digest complex carbs, as well as reducing inflammation in the gut and kicking bad bugs into touch which can give symptoms such as pain.
I was mostly constipated for years and the best thing I’ve ever done was to drink half a glass of prune juice before breakfast and then snack on soft dried prunes (about 5 or so) in the afternoon.
It’s made such a difference.
I also take probiotics and swear by them to keep my gut healthier.
I was recommended a probiotic called “naked biotics” the restore one and I have noticed a massive difference. I go more regularly which helps reduce the cramping I used to get! You can get it on Amazon
Hello, so sorry to hear you are having so much pain and bloating.
I, personally, found probiotics seem to upset my stomach so stopped taking them.
I’ve never had Linaclotide but wonder if the issues you are now having is a side effect?
I take Ground Milled Flaxseed for my chronic constipation - Tesco own make is the cheapest. I sprinkle either one teaspoon or one tablespoon, depending on how constipated I am, on my porridge or any other cereal in the morning. Flaxseed has a lot of health benefits besides fibre, if you goggle it.
When I have the pain and bloating, I use a hot water bottle or heat pad on my stomach and sip cooled down boiled water.
Hope you are able to resolve your problems. Take care.
Thanks very much for your reply. I do wonder about the side effects of Linoclotide. I have had to take breaks from it before and I am taking a couple of days off now.
I also had to stop taking Celebrex for severe degenerative disc disease along with severe scoliosis because it was causing digestive upset. I wonder if that has affected my digestive tract. Anyway, I am checking in with my doctor tomorrow.
I also use a heating pad at night! I will try the cooled down hot water and start using ground flax seed again. Thanks for the tips
Hi, Linoclotide was amazing for me then it just stopped working and left me very bloated. I now take Yakult once a day, also removed onions from my diet and I’m getting to the toilet now every couple of days and sometimes every day. I try to drink as much water as possible along with high fibre diet and high protein diet. The difference has been unbelievable. I have ibs c and slow transition constipation.
Hi Missy, that’s really too bad Linoclotide stopped working for you. I have had times when it seemed to stop working for me too. My doctor said to stop it for a while and restart it, and that usually worked. Not sure what is going on now with me though - I will work on increasing my water intake and fibre and look into Yakult. I haven’t heard of that before. I think being back at work in person every day is a contributing factor as I also tend to have a shy bowel as well!
