Magnesium and IBS -C

I have IBS-C and wondered if anyone has had any benefit from various forms of Magnesium or the product Natural Calm? Both are supposed to help with constipation as well as help with anxiety which I know can be very tied in with IBS. It sure is with mine!

I take Vitamze Magnesium a Citrate at night (1 and a half tablets - about 350mg) plus 1 tbsp ground flaxseed in yoghurt or a smoothie and this seems to keep things regular! I found that Natrual Calm gave me indigestion.

Recent advice from the Swedish health authority is that one should not eat any ground flax seed. They are making moves to get it taken off the shelves here in Sweden.

Why? Do you have more information about this? It's a great source of fibre, prebiotic and a source of omega 3. Would be interested too know why Sweden are banning it!

Bottom line about crushed linseed. Swedish National Health Authority (Livsmedelverket) a seriously reliable conservative organisation, warned last year not to eat too much crushed linseed. They have now completed their investigations and advise not to eat any crushed linseed whatsoever. Moves are afoot to take it off the market. It contains a substance which produces a toxin (poison) cyanide, hydrocyanic acid. Whole linseed passes through without producing too much cyanide but a daily limit of 1 to 2 tablespoons is mentioned. Linseed contains much omega 3 fat (good fat). Since the substances producing cyanide are water soluble and not fat soluble the level of cyanide in linseed OIL is low. This is a summary of their advice which I have translated for you. Best wishes.

I had the same with Natural Calm plus some nausea.

Thank you.

Hi there, I bought mine from Holland & Barrett (that's if you are in the UK) as someone had recommended it on here. I only started using it last night but that was actually for a problem that I have with my knee. The link to the one I bought is below and at the moment they have it buy one and then another for a penny in the penny sale.

It really depends on what your particular issue is.

If you have constipation meaning hard stool, the magnesium products may well help you.

If you have SLOW TRANSIT constipation and your nerves aren't firing in their own, then magnesium is unlikely to help, and you'll need a stimulant laxative.
