Failed! Be warned, Fodmappers.

Fodmap followed religiously for three months, feeling great, then guess what??

During the re-introduction period, I got seduced by a fresh white loaf from my local baker ( a real craftsman). One thickish slice, with butter, and now my gut is in chaos again. What's more, the bread had lost its appeal half-way through what was supposed to be a treat. Taste-buds had come to terms with wheat-free breads and pasta? Maybe. Or can instinct intervene?

I'm starting the re-introduction-of-fructans programme again this evening, after this case of Serves-You-Right, so hope to be---know I'll be--- back to feeling very well again in a few days.

To those hesitating --- dieting IS expensive and a fag--but I implore you to stick at it. To those with IBS/C, provided you drink the litres of water recommended, if you stick to the regime, it works miraculously.

Greetings to all.

Thank you for letting us know of your experience and how going wheat free has helped you.

What a bummer - I have made the same mistake with a couple of things - although proper fresh bread (the sort that goes stale within hours) I can get away with a small amount occasionally. Like you say a special diet is expensive and a bore - but well worth feeling human again x

I agree with you entirely. My diet is expensive but as you say well worth it to feel human !!

I love the positivity in this post! I'd love to keep in touch and find out how the reintroduction phase has gone! I'm currently in Barcelona with my bottle of amazing probiotic and avoiding garlic. Sticking to low fodmap running up to the holiday has definitely helped! Sam. x

Iv just had the same experience! Only I hand made my loaf myself, choosing French bread making flour as its lower than in gluten than English flour mixed with Spelt flour. After 3 months of fodmap and not having much success with wheat free bread recipies, I savoured every bite of this precious treat down to the last crumb! I even began to plan when I would make another tasty loaf for us to enjoy. My contentment soon began to fade approximately 40 minutes after this 'treat'. I was soon back of my happy cloud and perched on the 'white throne' with diarrhoea and breath taking stomach cramps. This morning my stomach still in turmoil and head aching, I continue my search to find a nice-ish wheat free bread recipie. If anyone has one I would very much appreciate it :)

Do t have a recipe but Genius soft brown sandwich loaf is acceptable and the only one I have found which actually tastes nice!

Maybe you have heard of the book called "Wheat Belly" ... In this book the author talks about how grains (wheat is the biggest offender, but then so are other grains) have the same affect on your brain in the SAME WAY as heroine... This is why it is so difficult to come off of wheat...and worse: all grain... So, its no wonder that our 'comfort foods' are all grain related, right? I have been SO disappointed the last couple of days... in spite of religiously sticking to my grain free diet I am so sick and weak and have horrid diarrhea... Thing is: I know its almost caused by anxiety... I am so discouraged this morning I can't even think straight...

I agree sashapet, Genius is acceptable but I really love the whole process of making bread myself. However, I am rapidly going off it now!

I haven't seen the book 'Wheat Belly' BettyA but it sounds worth a read so I'll see if Amazon has it. Thanks for recommending it.

I'm sorry to hear you are so poorly. Iv battled anxiety too although Im okay at the moment, thankfully. I find meditation, prayer, music and yoga helps me to focus and then I keep very busy if well enough.

I hope you find something that helps you to cope too. I want to encourage you to hang in there and keep hoping for better days to come.

Wheat-free bread isn't 'bread' as we have known it. In trying to eliminate wheat from one's diet, it's necessary to STOP COMPARING THE TWO.

My technique has been successful for adaptation. After a first mouthful of wheat-free bread, I decided I'd need to tell myself I was in some scary foreign situation--taken hostage perhaps-- and to survive I had to eat the few meals I was offered. Sounds silly, but realistic, in a way, with IBS as jailer!

At meal-times this focussed my mind away from gut-woes and into mentally creating adventure stories!

Also --I blush to admit-- I do "Grown-up colouring-in" as a distraction... books galore from Amazon and bookshops, felt pens nicked from the kids! A quarter-of-an-hour of this, now and then, reduces stress a little.

Wheat-free, bread-based meals aren't a load of fun, but I do find rolls better than slices. Plus a toasted, Genius-and-cheese sandwich, say, is better than going hungry which is bad for the gut which likes regularity.

And there are always those allowable low-FODMAP deserts: quite luxurious really. Eton Mess tonight.

Bon Appetit!
