Feeling Faint & nausea

Have others with IBS experienced prolonged bouts of nausea, dizziness, and near-fainting sensations? My IBS symptoms, triggered by stress and anxiety, often lead to changes in stool consistency, abdominal pain, and severe bloating. While I don't suffer from constipation or diarrhea, I frequently notice pain and discomfort in my stomach, accompanied by reflux. Over time, these symptoms worsen, culminating in weeks of struggling with persistent nausea and a sensation akin to fainting. I'm curious if others with IBS have encountered similar challenges?

Hi RuthBlossom, I am sorry to see you suffering from these symptoms which are very common if you have IBS. Dont worry dear as this is one of the symptoms we all have during any episode of IBS. Two says ago, I had some chocolate before bed time and within half an hour I was in severe pain and had to run to the toilet. Spent all night in pain and diahrrea.

It is my third day today following the BRAT diet and still feeling tired and lack energy. IBS has many different symptoms that differs from one person to another. Make sure you stay calm and avoid anxiety which aggrivates it. Hope you feel better soon :)

Hi dear, IBS is a nasty one and the most important thing is to avoid anxiety. these episodes happen to thousands of people around the world and it is just a phase so be calm as much as you can. Do the breathing exercise and meditate. that will make you feel better with time. Another thing, please go for a walk even if you are in pain and enjoy every thing you see around you as that will make you feel better and I believe that exercising reduces the pain as well. Hope you feel much better soon.

I agree with you completely! exercise is a great way to help the mind and body. I got sick the last few weeks because of stress and being overworked.. I had a hard time to have enough moments to myself to do the tings that relax me... I just got get the skills to not stress about things. some things aren't worth getting so sick over.

Hello RuthBlossom, just to say you are not alone as I know exactly how you feel as nausea, dizziness, and near-fainting sensations happen to me a lot. I've been told I have a mix of ibs-c and Gord, and although I don't suffer from pain, I do suffer from the symptoms you describe and they are horrible.. .

Thank you for your comment. I felt that the pain so so bad I may faint so I went to see the doctor again and it turns out I have low blood pressure that can cause the feeling of wanting to faint.

yes i have had exactly those symptoms over the years (in my case i believe it's the colon spasms interfering with my vagus nerve and causing a momentary drop in blood pressure ) I have the Headspace app for meditation which i can highly recommend

Wow, Thank you very much. I thought perhapps that the pain as so bad that it was causing me to feel like fainting. what I did not think about is that the vagus nerve can cause a drop in blood pressure. I went to my doctor yesterday & my blood pressure was very low. they dont have medication for loww BP in South Africa anymore so I tool a lot of salt and water. this morning I feel so much better. Thank you. I do need to do meditation. Thank you for the suggestion. I will check it out. 😊

Yes! I wonder if it's low blood pressure. And I think my SIBO has worsened, after having improved. It's all a mystery...

Sorry your SIBO has worsened. It is hard to live with such things and hard to know what is suddely going to trigger it. I know that sugar is whay Bacteria loves to thrive on. have you followed a diet for a while that has you AVOID: Lactose dairy, milk) fructose concentrate, lactulose, Splenda (sucralose), mannitol sorbitol (sugar free gum/mints), oligosaccharides (soy milk), corn syrup (regular sodas many others sweetened foods)...?

Sorry for the big delay replying. Yes, I've cut out all of those and will have organic 100% maple syrup in my tea/coffee IF I really need it. Removing these from my diet has made all the difference! Thanks.

Hi, I know how you feel. I have ibs c and acid reflux and slight lactose intolerance. I get lethargic and nauseous and dizzy on occasion. I'm mainly ok these days until my diet slips. I ate all and drank all things I know I shouldn't have at my daughters weekend wedding. So 3 days of naughtyiness eating. That was 20th April I'm still fighting the side effects. I'm sorry you are suffering maybe you need to have a word with your doctor try figure out what the issue is. I believe we are all different with ibs symptoms. Hope you get help soon.

I remember getting some nausea at the beginning, just before my IBS took hold. At that time I didn't have any gut problems, just the weird nausea and shakiness and other odd symptoms. The doctor couldn't find a thing wrong, and sent me to a neurologist who diagnosed migraine (with a "?" attached) So even he wasn't 100% sure what was happening.

Now, I rarely get nausea, I mostly get symptoms in the lower gut, but sometimes do get dizziness which is so weird. I feel like I've had a couple of drinks. That comes and goes, and usually lasts a few seconds only then goes again.

But a couple of times after a bm, I got what I now know to be a "vagal spasm", which felt quite scary, but fortunately not for long, and I found out as such, it's pretty harmless. But if I were you I'd still chat to the doctor about it. I wonder if your issue could be vagal spasms?

RuthBlossom profile image
RuthBlossom in reply toLuisa22

Thank you very much for your resonse. 🌹I thought it was vagal spasms. I asked my doctor about it and he siad it was possible.. somehow what I did have is low blood pressure, this can cause the feeling of being faint..If your vagus nerve becomes too active, it can cause your heart rate and blood pressure to drop too much or too fast (or both). If your blood pressure drops too much, this causes an “attack” of vasovagal syncope, and you pass out because there's not enough blood flow to your brain. in South Africa they dont sell medication for low blood Pressure. I am eating things that is salty and adding salt to my food as well as drinking water. This is helping so much.😊

Licorice root, or licorice candy, or herbal teas with licorice added, can also help slightly raise the blood pressure.

That would maybe be do-able if you have your own blood pressure monitor and can keep a watch on things, and keep as good a balance as possible.

One N.B. though....if you have IBS D, licorice can be a bit over stimulating for the gut. With IBS C, it may help a LOT.

RuthBlossom profile image
RuthBlossom in reply toLuisa22

Wow! Thank you so very much. What is interesting is my dad suggested I take Dutch salted licorice as I have low blood Pressure & South Africa doesn't sell medicine for that. My IBS & BP feels better. Thank you very much. That is very helpful to know that

Oh poor you. I have IBS-D and it's really awful. I can't honestly say I have much pain or headaches just a terrible pain and a really loud grumbling noise in my intestine. I call it my PEWS....poo early warning system...🤭 if I go out, which is very rarely, I make sure I have my poo kit with me. My GP prescribed Mebeverine (Colofac) and it really has worked well, but there are still things I can't eat....garlic, onions, mushrooms, apples....all things I love. I've started following the low FODMAP diet, eliminating all foods that can ferment inside the body. I think IBS treats us all sooo differently and I hope your symptoms subside for you....🙋‍♀️

Thank you very much for your reply.🌹 I hope the FODMAP diet gives you some relief. Yes IBS is different for each person. I used to have a food diary to help me work out what causes fromblems and how much I can tolerate
