Professor Graham Hughes' Blog May 2015
May 2015 May was best forgotten as far as the weather was concerned – rain, cold and windy – once again one felt sorry for the tourists huddled on the open tour buses and the river cruise boats. However, as I write this, “June is bustin out” ……. “please disregard my previous letter…” It’s funny how

CLUMPING PLATELETS
The Curious Case of the Clumping Platelets The first time I heard the phrase CLUMPING PLATELETS was on January 26th this year when following my routine (as if anything can ever be routine in ITP) 3 month blood test on January 15th. I got a telephone call from my specialist advising that I would have

New and confused?!
Hi all. Hope you are all well. I have a long and painful medical history which I will put in below but not in too much detail. Feel free to ask questions - I am not shy about sharing! I apologise in advance for the long and rambling post. 2009 - had a partial hysterectomy, left ovaries took everything

Gastroparesis (slow stomach emptying with pain)
Does anyone have any knowledge of gastroparesis? I was back in the hospital on Friday with terrible stomach pain. For the last two weeks, every time I have eaten, I immediately feel full and ill within 30-45 minutes. I get a bulge at the top of my stomach like I am pregnant and I feel like I have

Professor Graham Hughes April 2015 Blog
April 2015 March saw a marvellous new initiative here in London. Baroness Estelle Morris, the Chair of our charity, and Baroness Drake succeeded in raising the issue of Hughes syndrome (antiphospholipid syndrome/APS) in the House of Lords. By doing this, they have succeeded in ramping up the awareness

Serratia marcescens
We'd have liked to continue the tablets for another week but

is a pretty powerful drug and Dad is so thin and weak and in his 80's. It was a dilemma of which would do him more harm- to leave the serratia bugs to wreak havoc in his lungs or to have more

Home iv's
Hi Everyone, well after several 'problems' since December (2 exacerbations and 1 virus) my doctor at Papworth decided I needed iv's. It was agreed that I could do them at home as there is a very easy way of administering them which does not involve syringes with needles. I went on Wednesday to spend

Hi, My daughter has APS & Sjorgren's, and, although the GP happily tells us her thyroid is 'normal', Prof Hughes is not convinced! She has had no documented thrombotic events, but presents with the usual migraines, brain fog, neuralgia, etc. She has tried asprin and Plavix, but they did not help

FLAIR Trial - ErnieUK More Dehydration Round 5 FCR
So I learn that the main point of the Co-Trimoxzole (trade name
Septrin
) is for lung infections, PCP Pneumocystis pneumonia (I’m not sure how many forms of Pneumonia there are) Now it was a bit of a shock to go back to Hospital on day 2 for the transfusion, but with the increasing effects of the chemotherapy

Unknown DVT.......so far. Backpack in 5 weeks!!!
Hi. I write this post from my hospital bed. A week ago I was admitted after suffering pain, cold and numbness in my right foot reaching up to my mid-calf. After a visit to the walk-in centre and several tests and a CT scan at A&E they diagnosed a blood clot just below the knee. I am a fit and healthy

FCR Round 2 Uncontrolled Sickness
Fortunately agreement was reached that I had no evidence of any actual infection so the cannula removed, switched back to oral antibiotic
Septrin
(Co-Trimoxazole), and I was discharged on day 7 of round 2. That was a big relief.

Question about long haul air travel
I had a dvt in my right leg from behind my knee to my ankle last August. Was on warfarin for 3 months and am doing fine now. Doctor says if I have another dvt will be on anticoagulant for life. Cause of my dvt was a double genetic mutation. I love to travel and especially enjoy cruises, but am nervous
