Why do we get myxoedema?
First, by myxoedema I am specifically meaning the swelling so strongly associated with hypothyroidism - the non-pitting oedema which affects so many. Second, this is simply one new paper announcing their specific findings. It does not mean it is the only reason. As I read it, the paper

Has any female with AMN had kidney problems? I was diagnosed with end stage renal failure early this year. Came out of nowhere.
I am 65 and started having AMN symptoms in my early 40's. I was diagnosed in 1998 after my second one week visit to the Mayo, first visit was in 1991 with no diagnosis. Then the very long chain fatty acid link with AMN was discovered and that is how they finally discovered what I have when I went back

So annoyed!!
Recieved a copy of a letter sent to my gp today from my old rheumie. Apparently I missed my appointment with him (which I cancelled as I am under a new rheumie now). Anyhow the letter said my recent blood tests results (taken in August!) show that I am ANA positive 1:80 (nucleolar) but everything else

Does anyone have any advice for me?
I have CSS (diagnosed in 2008). I also have, heart failure, asthma and Bronchiectasis (progressive lung damage); all due to the CSS. You can imagine the amount of meds I'm on. I tried to claim for an exemption card two weeks ago but have just received a letter to say "NO" because I don't have one

Thyroid Hormones Decrease Plasma 1a,25-Dihydroxyvitamin D Levels
Somewhat ironic that we see this very detailed explanation of why "active" vitamin D is low in HYPERthyroid people, while the most common story here is of HYPOthyroid people having low vitamin D! As so often, the work was done in mice. Be good to know if the same is true in humans. [i]Endocrinology

COPD and SVT
Hi all, I'm new to the site and looking for some help, please. In November I was rushed to hospital with pneumonia, which I'd never had before and the diagnosis was Type 2 respiratory failure and possible heart failure. I was admitted to intensive care and stayed there for 5 days then onto a ward.

Are there any kidney transplant groups?
Does anyone know if there is any such thing as a transplant meeting group either in person or online where transplant patients who are maybe looking to find a partner can go? When I was on dialysis the thought of finding a partner was far from my mind, but now I have had a transplant I get the feeling

I've been insulin dependent for over 40 years and on dialysis coming up to 1 year. I have noticed that since starting dialysis my blood sugar levels are really difficult to control. It doesn't seem to take much to make my readings sky high and i'm taking more insulin than ever to try and keep things

Peritoneal Dialysis or Haemo?
Currently being "worked up" for living donor transplant from my brother but need to make a decision on dialysis as a back up. Am thinking of PD rather than Haemo. Can anyone tell me whether there is any discomfort when "carrying" the fluid in your peritoneum. Not sure how much fluid goes in but do you

By the time I had been transfered to a specialist hospital I had gone into
renal
and liver
failure
and my husband and my mom were told that if the TIPPS procedure didn't work there would be nothing else they could do for me,( I'm quite glad that I was oblivious to all of this).

Kidney Biopsy
I've had my kidney transplant for ten years now and have recently been having a few problems. To try and find out why I have to have a biopsy on Monday, can anyone tell me what it entails and if it hurts as i am worried :-(

Does anyone take Renagel (Sevelamer hydrochloride) and have any side effects?
I was on Calcichew for years and quite happy on it. The Doctor changed it as my phosphate levels were getting higher.

Steroids and fluid retention
I put a blog on here some months ago about fluid retention and got a lovely lot of kind caring replies which I acted on. However my GP still insisted it was the steroids which were making me retain fluid. Even when I got to looking like Michelin Man and had fluid pouring out of my right lower leg nothing
