hello , has anyone on this wonderful platform needed an ankle fusion? My sub talar joint has collapsed and I have been recommended a fusion and repositioning of tendon.
In the meantime I have been troubled by severe knee pain , X-ray was normal! However MRI shows a meniscal tear and stage 4 osteoarthritis which means I will need a TKR.
Devastated, as I have already had one hip replacement in my mid 40’s and the other 3 years ago. Maybe somebody else has had this surgery?

Hi UCTD. I’m so sorry you have these problems with arthritis. I only have moderately severe arthritis in my back so can’t reply from experience. Because many who use this lovely but small group have systemic sclerosis and/ or Raynauds and post about more systemic or vascular issues - if you don’t get many replies then you may want to ask same on much bigger groups such as Arthritis Action and NRAS. I do hope others here reply with help but if not this is what I’d do xx
hello I had a subtalar joint fusion when I was 20 due to a bad break of the ankle and osteoarthritis growing in the joint making it unbearable to walk. As soon as I woke up from my operation all of the pain was gone and there has been no pain since. My advice would be to make sure you put 110% into physio because my ankle has been back to normal ever since.
Hi UCTD, I’m also diagnosed with UCTD but I have many SSc symptoms which are worsening, I have osteoarthritis in my fingers and was told prior to the onset of SSc symptoms that all the joints in my fingers needed fusion or replacing. I was horrified and did some research into this to find that unlike large joint replacement, small joint replacement was not any near so successful and could make the problem worse. I chose not to go down this path and now find that my finger joints occasionally give me gip but the Raynauds and skin tightening give far worse pain. Obviously this is not the same as your ankle problems and someone has already posted that this was successful for them, which is good, but I urge you to do alot of research into this as there are good medical sites that you can look at reliably. As OldTed has said good that you are asking the question here but yes go to other forums too then hopefully you can make an informed decision. I’m also having trouble though with ankle joints but a lot of the problem is also due to skin tightening on the soles and top of my feet which can make walking incredibly painful and difficult which I think a lot of people on this forum also experience.
I hope you can get the best advice to make your decision about surgery and wish you well.
