Hi Everyone, I have been having a lot of sinus issues. Congestion , cheek pain, headache and post nasal drip. I also have allergic rhinitis. I am on Flonase, Claritin and just started montelukast . Has anyone taken plain mucinex to help with your sinuses ? Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated .

Mucinex is a brand name for an expectorant. It aids in the clearance of mucus from the upper and lower airways, including the lungs, bronchi, and trachea. It is used to make coughing more productive, not for sinuses. You can get it cheaper as a store brand.

You are already taking Flonase and Claritin for your allergies: sinus congestion, sneezing itchy eyes and throat and runny nose. The Montelukast treats the coughing and wheezing of asthma.

For the congestion, cheek pain and headache you would need a decongestant. A lot of people take in in a pill along with an antihistamine as in Claritin-D. But some conditions like high blood pressure rule out either or both of these. And you are taking so many things now that You must talk to your doctor before adding another drug. But the decongestant would help your sinuses drain to relieve the pressure pain.

Another route you could pursue would be naturopathic remedies. First, increase the humidity in your home up to 50%. Watch the condensation on your windows. I use a diffuser at night and add some essential oils that help to keep my sinuses clear and reduce the dripping. It really works. Or try a homeopathic remedy for sinuses. I take one to three doses spread apart when I start to feel the pressure. I get mine at 1-800-homeopathy.

I am not on many other drugs so if my sinus pain gets really bad, I take a generic decongestant. These all have been the end of my sinus infections. I still have some distress from thick mucus interfering with my sleep. Good luck!
