Hi everyone, I have been given the name of this amino acid as a suggestion for use for my RL. Does anyone know of treatment with this and if so, any comments? I believe L-Tyrosine is a precursor to dopamine.

L-Tyrosine
I tried it and didn’t find it made much difference. I didn’t have any guidance on dose etc though so maybe there is some way of taking it that would improve efficacy.
This is interesting. It doesn’t say how much to take of that amino acid, but it does give ideas of what foods and activities that can increase dopamine in your body. I printed it for reference.
L-Tyrosine is a precursor to L-Dopa.
However, the research says we are not short of dopamine. It is the dopamine receptors that we have trouble with.
So by all means try, but be prepared for disappointment.
There's no harm in trying L Tyrosine for a while. The only damage it could cause is probably to your bank balance.
However, I guess that any apparent effect it might have may be just a placebo effect. This based on the notions that taking a precursor doesn't necessarily mean an increase in a neurotransmitter and, as Parminter points out, RLS is not due to a lack of dopamine.
The only way it can be shown that a substance is actually effective is by a properly conducted trial which I imagine had not been done for L Tyrosine.
If you eat a good diet you will be getting sufficient amino acids anyway.
I understand when you're suffering to be tempted by claims about food supplements. I have succumbed myself several times.
I know what you mean! I keep trying to find something that will help in this endless hell of no or little sleep and seemingly endless pain and legs! I have read some sites as advised by posts and I think I get plenty of this amino acid from the foods I eat which are nuts, seeds, oats, eggs, cheese (a little hard cheese), etc. My diet is basic and mostly whole foods apart from some gluten free bread. I make my own muesli and that's about all the complex foods I eat. Sometimes a gluten free vegan/vegetarian meat with no dairy!!! It's not really a fun diet but if it helps then I have to try.
Thank you for your advise.
Took it, didn't make any difference. I can't imagine otherwise than that excess, like excess amino acids from foods, will be deaminated and used to provide energy – and there won't be much from a 500mg capsule!

Thanks for the website. I've skimmed through it and from what I eat, although no meat or dairy, I should be getting plenty as I have a lot of oats, seeds, nuts and will have to increase eggs and cheese. However, I should already be getting plenty. I've kept the site so will print out and read in detail. Thanks for the help.
Here's an old thread - most people panned L-Tyrosine. Lots of off-topic responses due to flooding in TX. healthunlocked.com/rlsuk/po...
I haven't tried L-Tyrosine but I've had good results since adding L-Theanine powder to my coffee, although this is also the time when I started taking iron every other night so i'm guessing it's probably more the iron that should be thanked.
I take L-tyrosine every day for about a month already. No effect for RLS. I keep doing it because it helps me to stay focused while burning fat on a low caloric died.
I take 400 mg. You get used to it though. And I take everything else you wrote. Daily.
