Today I saw the nurse practitioner at my surgery, just for a blood pressure check.I said I was still smoke free and also nicotine free but that I'd replaced most of my cigs with bad stuff like sweets (candy) & chocolate.I'm changing now & I've lost 14lbs in a month. She said that the single most important thing you can do is give up.smoking & not to worry too much about the weight gain which would sort itself out.
I've been beating myself up for quite a while over the weight thing and not really focused on what I'd achieved with the cigs. So,if you're reading this smoke free and fretting about your weight gain then don't fret,WELL DONE on a fabulous quit, worry about the weight later.
Hugs to all

WOW H, 14lbs is remarkable weight loss..... all that walking your doing is obviously helping you I've gained about 11lb but I had lost 10lb before I gave up smoking (so pleased I did...) just need to get into the habit of doing some walking in the evening (or morning)...not quite ready to try dieting though (she says as she sticks a biscuit in her mouth...). Am just trying to maintain the weight but you and your nurse are quite right...... better to give up the smokes and put on a few pounds
Blimey Helen, how can you lose that much weight in a month? Did you starve yourself? I wish I could lose a bit more but I am definitely going in the right direction now.
Quite right to say to give up the smoking first, don't even think about the weight, then once you are comfortable with not smoking (a few months in, probably), start to consider losing the weight.
I manage to get to the gym 5 days a week and last week I walked (on the treadmill and around the seafront) 48.65 miles.Walking is the only way I can do this,I also log everything I eat on myfitnesspal.a brilliant little site that gives me a calorie allowance based on my exercise and weight loss goals.I could really quite happily be a couch potato but that way lies disaster!!!
Andi my sweet ,I promise I'm not awesome at all,I just do a lot of walking and moan at Greedy Benny & his sister Mizzle(the cats) that most of the time I'm crackered !!!!
Was last weekend, was a BIG disaster!!! 15 craft stalls and the only folk that sold anything were the cup cake people!! Given the wrong start time so got there about 90 mins before start time and paid for electricity that wasn't there, left an hour before finish.LOADS of unhappy stakeholders.Might have a couple of bookings for Christmas tho so I'm happy with that.
AH H that wasn't good.... but what does it tell you about our habits if the cup cake stall did the selling....! (not a lover of cup cakes too much icing) But at least something positive came out of it for you
Morning Yellow Snowdon. So glad I read your post. I could have written that. I thought all my trousers had shrunk. I was starting to look like an egg on legs. I feel reassured now that I have read your post. Thanks Ray x
Hi,Well the walking is ok and still painful but I'm enjoying the countryside sooooooooo much.I love the flowers around here,I'm fond of the ferns and foxgloves. I'm fortunate in as much that if I walk for 5 minutes either side of the village I'm in the fields. The down side is that the village is built on a hill so there's not much flat walking. It's the hills that cause most of the pain.I hope to get out for a longer walk this week.Thank you yellowsnowdrop.
Yellowsnowdrop has written some pearls of wisdom and congratulations on loosing 14llbs, you must be exercising the same will power that you are currently applying to your quit attempt!
Smoking raises your blood sugar levels, hence this is why smokers skip meals but obviously don't get adequate nutrition from this behaviour. This is why it's important not to reach for high fat or high sugar foods in replacement for cigarettes.
came here to basically say the same thing. I've gained about 2 stone since I quit (though it's been nearly 5 months now, huzzah!) and with summer here I am starting to lose it again. To be honest it has got me down at times but you're totally right that it's important to focus on the positives and I am really pleased to be cigarette free! I never thought I'd do it during the summer but each milestone (first festival without tobacco, getting used to spending hours in the beer garden without a fag, etc.) is getting easier! x
Ya weight gain is annoying for sure. I really enjoy fashion , so I'll admit it does get me down as well. Smoking is just not an option for me anymore. Just too dangerous. Awesome quit!!
Yogurtweaver (fab name!!) PLEASE don't let the weight gain thing get you down. The whole point of my post was to highlight how much the weight gain REALLY DOESN'T matter and just how awesome we ALL are for quitting the cigs. I'm really glad it's getting easier for you, those 'firsts' can be REALLY dodgy but learning to deal with them and move on is all part of the process. HUGE HUGE congrats on an awesome 5 months, you are indeed a superstar. Hugs H x
