Help! I'm day 7 of quitting smoking. And I'm a mess. I could just about chew my arm off for a smoke right now.

I'm miserable, cry at the drop of the hat, and think about smoking every second of the day. If it keeps going like this I almost think I'd rather be a smoker. When will it get easier?

Hi gypsysmum, Welcome to quit support. It is hard at the beginning but believe me it gets better. Are you taking any form of nicotine replacement to help you when you get the cravings. If you let Emjay know what nrt you are taking and how many cigarettes you had a day she will be able to help you. :)

This is exactly what I was saying on about day 5!! I am never an emotional person and I turned into a wreak!!!! My friends were shocked when told them I had been crying!!! Im not on day 15 and its def got better, thou I fear I still have lots of moments to still come! I would def find a replacement to help you, im using e cig and vapour and gums...oh and patches ....def helping and im just working for now getting out of the routines of the smoking...once I feel im past that will then try cut back on nicotine. Good luck,,, I have said the same in the last week...maybe I would rather smoke....but coming on here and reading many scarey stories of what people have been through has made me stronger and more determined. x

lol good to hear I'm normal then Mindermummy! I'm not taking anything, just straight cold turkey. Looking back perhaps I should have tried something. But now I've got 7 days with nothing, it would feel like a backwards step to add nrt or anything in now, so I guess I'll just keep going how I am. Just hope it gets easier SOON!

Hi Gypsysmum, welcome to Quit Support and congratulations on making it through to Day 7!

Let me put your mind at ease by letting you know that how you are feeling is normal at this stage of quitting. Regardless of whether or not you use any form of NRT, you would probably be experiencing this anyway.

Look at it this way; your body really is recognising by now that you are no longer pumping it with all those 4,000 plus toxins (over 60 that are cancer causing too!) that you have been over the past number of years.

It is possible for you to be able to quit going down the cold turkey road, you just have to stick with it and know that you will get through it.

You now no longer have nicotine in your system, as it only takes 48 hours for it to leave your body :-)

There are thousands of nicotine receptors in your brain which are all hungry for nicotine. Over time, smoking increases the number of these receptors in your brain. Once you stop smoking, these receptors can take 12-14 weeks to down regulate and in the meantime will make a right fuss in trying to get you to give in and have 'just that one' cigarette. Please, [please, keep on keeping on and don't let them beat you :-)

You will have your moments and you will be as up as you are down, however it will get easier. Just as long as you don't have that one puff, or that one cigarette.

Remember the NOPE rule (Not One Puff Ever) and you will be on to a winner :-)

Stay positive and keep smiling :-)

You can do this :-)

Thanks so much for this information, makes total sense! Iโ€™m also on day 7 and ready to pull my hair out, good to know the science behind this and a timeframe-makes me more hopeful. Thanks again!

Hi Gypsymum

how are you doing today? have any of the random symptoms passed?

I think lots of us feel what you are going through, it will pass. Are you using any NRT? x

I'm on day 9 so completely understand what you're going through, especially about the crying. I've been crying nearly every day and feel like such a baby haha. But that is a new way of relieving stress I guess. What are u using to help u quit? It will get easier for you. Everyone goes through this crappy stage. I think it's mind over matter really. How long have you smoked?

gypsysmum profile image
gypsysmum

thanks all. Day 9 now. Not using anything, just cold turkey. I've been a smoker for over 20 years. Gosh that sounds terrible saying it out loud!

The worst thing at the moment is, my teeth really hurt! Someone said its because the blood supply is coming back to my gums so it will hurt for a bit. Someone else told me her husband lost half his teeth when he quit smoking! So that is freaking me out. I'm paranoid about my teeth anyway, so this is really worrying me. Still very sooky and emotional too. But determined to do this! Thats NINE whole days closer to my goal, yayyy!

Hey gypsysmum,

My gums bleed like mad during the first couple of weeks or so. Even when I ate soft fruit like bananas. I think it has something to do with increased circulation but I'm not sure.

I think it's also quite common, just one of many processes your body will go though in healing itself.

Good on you and good luck giving up.

It will be the best thing you could ever do.

ian.

wow i have not been crying, i have not had a cig in 7 days, been using the patch and it seems to help alot

My gums bleed when I brush my teeth

Briarwood profile image

Hiya Dizzy and welcome to quit support ๐Ÿ˜Š

Bleeding gums are a very normal side effect of quitting, they are starting to heal. If you use a small soft brush and rinse with warm salt water it will help. Some members have used corsydl mouth wash and this is very good too. You're doing very well and this will pass so keep up the good work๐Ÿ˜Šx

How long does it take to go i bleed alot and dont like it :(

monky profile image
monkyAdministratorCake sniffer outerโ€ข in reply toDanielWilliams

Dizzy, just please calm down a bit eh :) :)

bleeding gums are very common in the early weeks of our quit journey :o Some of us have bleeding gums in the first few days :o others its weeks, others it flippin months later :o We are all made differently, sooo it takes us all different times to recover :)

Dizzy, when you smoked, you sort of smoked through your gums :o your gums make a sort of hard crust to compensate this :) and when we quit, this hard coating on your gums isnt needed any more :) soooooo, your gums get rid of this coating and you are left with a new soft gum :) as in when you were a baby :) sooo, now your gums have to harden off to your new life style :)

If you have an issue with this, then please nip and see your friendly dentist eh :) :)

Please, please just be patient :) :)

Keep resisting, these are the hardest times, I've been through so much, my daughter was bullied relentlessly, my ex parter wanted to see his daughter but he's too violent to ever be able to see him, we lost my mum in law last month and everything else went to pot, but I'm still not smoking... take it as a challenge and fight it, you will really see how strong you are and be so proud of it.. keep going, you are doing great... what don't break us makes us stronger and I now feel like a lion ๐Ÿฆ X
