I am spitting blood, i think my gums are blee... - Quit Support
I am spitting blood, i think my gums are bleeding..what could be the problem? I have been a smoker for 12 yrs, just quit smoking now for 10d
Hi Sanjayneha, and welcome to the site Congratulations on 10 days, that's a great achievement
Your mouth does weird stuff when you give up smoking, its as though it wants you to start up that disgusting and toxic habit again.... it's all part of the process - bleeding gums, wobbly teeth, ulcers, sensitivity.... if your unsure just pop along to the dentist...They'll be delighted (like us) that you've stopped the habit as it most definitely improves your oral health
This is a great site so have a look at whats gone before and they'll be plenty of people on here who will give you all the support you need
Good luck and let us know how you get on
Hi and welcome. Yep, spitting blood is usual as Droppyj says. I swapped to a soft toothbrush, started using Listerine for gums and brushed 3 times a day. The bleeding will stop but can take several weeks. Don't worry but you could visit the dentist for extra help. Best wishes, it won't be long until you get your 1 month badge, and then 2.............etc.
Hi Sanjayneha, it's lovely to meet you and welcome to this lovely quit site. Also Massive congratulations on your 10 days quit - that is fantastic so well done you
A long time ago, long before I stopped smoking, my dentist told me that smoking actually affects the circulation of blood to the gums and this in itself causes the gums to recede. When I did finally stop my mouth became very sore and uncomfortable and yes, my gums started bleeding. I knew from here that it was a sign of my body recovering from the effects that smoking had on it, and I also knew from what my dentist had said years ago, that the circulation to my gums was improving. Even now I still bleed a bit, but I don't worry about it because I know it will pass (I've been to the dentist since and she reassured me of that). I just try to brush my teeth gently and I use a lot more mouthwash.
On the plus side, the first thing I noticed when I stopped smoking was that I now have a lovely pink tongue! So check out your tongue, I am so proud of mine now! xx
Thank you every one. That is very comforting. I did visit a dentist and he told me the same.
Happy to be a non smoker now and look forward towards healthy life.

Hello 190j080
Congrats👏🎉🎉🎉. The top of my mouth was raw and peeling. It freaked me out. My gums were sore..... It was awful....... Just rinse with listerine and be gentle when you brush your teeth. Use a soft brush. You'll be okay🌹
Ps or you could ask your dentist xx
Hi JO and welcome to quit support .
Sadly bleeding gums is a very common part of the quitting process. Many of our members have suffered with it.
Have a wee look around the pinned posts to the right of the screen as there is lots of information on what people can experience as part of our bodies recovering.
The one thing that we have all noticed is that none of these last for too long.
Please let us know your quit date so we can add you to our wall of winners
All the very best of luck on your quit journey

Hi 190JO80, its lovely to meet you and a big warm welcome to our lovely quit support community
As our lovely members have said, these are very normal symptoms at your stage in your journey sooo no worries there eh but it could perhaps put your mind at ease if you made an appointment to see your GP
Good luck Jo and please keep in contact with us

Hiya 19 and welcome to quit support😊
2 months quit is fantastic, so well done to you. Unfortunately quitting throws up lots of unwanted side effects which usually pass. Just to put your mind at rest, it would be a good idea to get checked out by your Doctor. Our bodies take time to heal, so please be patient. You could try some of the breathing techniques on the right under pinned posts as they might help you. This journey has ups and downs but you really are doing the best thing for your health and it will all be worth it, so hang in there and hope you feel better soon💐😊x
bleeding gums are also a sign of gum disease.
