Pain in groin going down the thigh

I have been tapering prednisolone, got down to 20mg then went to 17.5mg and started getting pains in my legs and hips, so went back up to 20mg.But have been helping my husband who had a stroke beginning of January, who was doing really well with his walking, but then had a fall and now has gone to no walking, shuffles along and been leaning on me.

I have never had leg pain with PMR before, is that possible?

I did have xrays to rule out a fracture, none was found.....but the pain is just getting worse, I can hardly pick my legs up (severe pain in groin area) to get into bed.

Could it be a fracture of the pelvic area?

For painkillers I am taking Tremadol and paracetamols, not touching sides🤦🏼

I have IBS so cant just take any painkiller...any suggestions please would be very welcome.

Thank you in advance xx

Certainly is, see picture and if ordinary painkillers don’t help then it sounds very likely . Would suggest you are flaring with the added stress of your husband’s current situation.a Can you get any help with him, if only temporarily?

This is flare protocol, which should hopefully get back under control -

Thank you so much DorsetLady for your informative reply.I have asked my local surgery where I can get temporary help but they very non committal .....the stroke unit come again on Friday I will have another chat with them.

25mg seemed to be the ideal dose it was when I started dropping from that dose that the pain started so i will go back and only for the 14 days.

Thank you so much have found the pain totally exhausting.

Have a lovely evening xx

See how you are at the 14day mark - and if not sure then maybe try 22.5 mg initially for another week -and then have another think..

Where is the thigh pain? Inner or outer aspect of the thigh?

Den73 profile image

Inner and also on the back of the thigh

Aductor muscle maybe and hamstrings - typical places to be affected by a flare of PMR.

Thank you PMRpro ....are there excercises to release these muscles I could do or would that make it worse?

Don't know - enough pred is the first point of attack but piriformis etc stretches are probably useful because the tightening of all those muscles is likely to be underlying the groin pain. The former rehab rheumy at my local hospital has always been adamant that any remediation of these problems does require physio exercises as well as other things for real success.

Thank you I have upped the pred and I will try stretches, appreciate all the advice I have received. Xxx

Hi there,I started to get severe pain in my left thigh and groin last year, Dr said I needed an MRI, but to get one quickly I had to go private. Result showed a trapped nerve in the lumbar region L2/3. The private hospital tried a spinal steroid injection which was not successful, so I am now on Co-dydramol painkillers and Ralvo pain patches.

First thing in the morning is the worst time, until the painkillers work. I have to limit the number I take to 8 a day or less as it can set off my Diverticulitis. What fun getting older is!!

Thanks Marcy47 that is what it feels like this morning....agony.I think I will pay a visit to the GP again, the moment I put pressure on the leg the pain starts.

Thanks for your input. Xxxx

If it is bursitis that is a different thing - and hip replacement doesn't stop it, they do sometimes remove the bursa though,

I’ve only just read about the possibility of removing the bursa. I’ve had increasing pain in my left leg for over ten years and the doctor had claimed it’s bursitis all that time. Do you have experience with the removal of the bursa or know someone who has?

Hi Satya70 no I havent heard of removing yhe bursa first i hear of it too. Its worth making enquiries with consultants. Hope you get the results.I didnt have my bursa removed when i had my right hip replacement and have never had pain there again.xx

Afraid not - just know it is an option and isn't always removed for a hip replacement.
