Thigh pain

I've had PMR for 8 years and then GCA. And came off steroids because I was up and down, then I developed osteoarthritis in last 2 years.in my back, neck and hips. While walking up a hil I developed thigh pain, thought it was a hamstring injury, I have had it for 3 months, but its quiet unbearable, I've had MRI on cervical spine,Lumbar spine and MRI on Thigh (showed tendinitis on the hip and osteoarthritis)and Xray on hips. Showed degenerative disease, disc changes, arthropathy, disc bulging, degenerative signal change on bone marrow. Alot to take in on report.

I can't lift my leg or get into a car or sit down, but I have appointment with physio tomorrow, just thought maybe some on here would have experienced similar thanks

Hi

Now you can see related post - but for completeness I have copied my reply to your previous post -

Think you probably need to see a physio or at least look up some exercises for your right hip -plenty on line - but did your hip X-ray should OA?

Can you be referred to the muscular-skeletal clinic within the orthopaedic department at local hospital?

Had you given your post a more relevant title you might have brought related posts to view.

Not sure you can entirely blame the steroids.

.. and I know you have physio appointment - so please let us know outcome from that..

Thank you so much, someone on here had tendinitis on hip and seem to have same symptoms, and 20mg of steroids for a month did the trick. I did think of taken a high dose of steroids. Because it is unbearable to lift leg, but I'll see what physio says tomorrow, thanks again.

It does sound tendinitis-y but a high dose of oral pred isn't always the best approach and it can be part of a larger picture like greater trochanteric pain syndrome which needs a multi-pronged apprach. Which is why we say - get a referral to the MSK experts.

Thanks I went to physio today she work on me, but she said I need to see a consultant, and said i mightvbe better going private, she didn't think tendinitis would cause that cramp pain I describe, and she wasn't sure if it was coming from my back or hip, she did work on me for 30 mins, and said she could do a couple of sessions, but said I could be back to where I started. I made appointment with my Doctor to see where I go from here.

Hopefully they will listen and act - has the physio made notes for the doctor?

Yes, I have, & I can’t lift my leg to get into the car…instead put your bottom down first onto the seat & try to swing both legs in together. It takes a bit to get used to, but it allows me to get in…& reverse it on the way out! If you find the swing difficult you can buy a round shaped disc which swivels & helps you to do it. Hope this helps!

Thanks, yes that's the way I get into car bottom first, this is like an unbearable cramp when yo try to lift leg, I was at a physio today, she did work on me, but she said she wasn't sure it it was my back or hip, she said I definitely need an injection.

Ihave bursitis on left side & sciatica on right side, & a spinal tumour, so haven’t quite achieved pain free thighs, hips, lower back for 15 years…the patches (buprenorphine) + tramadol came closer, but are not killing the pain. Oh, & OA is a lot of places, too. I get a lot of nerve pain, which I think is difficult to treat. Get stabbing & stinging pains in feet & hands too. I’ve had a lot of steroid injections, latest was for bursitis but sadly the good effect only lasted 3 weeks.

I too have that pain, I can’t raise my right leg to get into the car. Somedays walking is difficult. Certain movements of my leg cause the pain which feels like a nerve. Sounds mad but I can’t makeout if it’s my thigh or my groin.I’m ok when I’m sitting but when I get out of the chair my thighs are so stiff I can hardly walk.

Yes this happened to me when I was walking up a hill, felt like hamstring injury that was 4 months ago, I don't know weather its a nerve? But I've come to the end of my tether now🫣

I was at a physio today she wasn't sure if it's coming from my back or hip, she said I probably need injection.

Since my reply to you things have changed. My husband is having health problems and I have been very stressed. I was on 6mg pred and decided to go up to 10mg. Just to get me over the next week.

The pain in my right leg has gone I’m not so stiff and I am walking much better. I am surprised that the increased pred has helped as the thigh or groin pain was only on the right side !!

It's odd, but I don't think it's uncommon for PMR flares to present initially as a one-sided problem, as though PMR wasn't confusing enough already! Certainly this is what happened to me when I had a major flare a few years ago. Caused me to delay treatment for rather a long time. 🤷‍♀️

Thank you I should have realised earlier to increase the steroids.

I’ve had PMR long enough but I suppose like a lot of us I hate having to take more. Good news is that I am feeling better and my walking has improved. So onwards and upwards😘

Pred has a habit of masking most pain caused by inflammation whatever the cause… so really no surprise..and PMR can often start on one side [usually your weaker side] and then progress to both sides.
