I have been holding off starting a taper from 8.5 mg of Prednisone daily to 8 mg after two unsuccessful attempts this spring and lingering groin pain.
8 days ago, I had a fall off a landing onto a hard surface and broke 3 ribs, (left side) ,bruised kidneys (blood in urine) and pelvis.
X-rarys show no fracture of the pelvis or hip (partial hip replacement january 2024), but groin pain is getting worse making walking difficult. The pain is mostly on the left side.
I don't know if it is PMR related or related to the fall although it was present but not as severe before the accident. Should I increase my Prednisone for a few days or see Physician for examination?

I would be inclined to see my physician as a matter of priority . I think that your pelvic investigations should be repeated or extended. It does sound like they have missed an injury or maybe a sprain or bruising has not shown up. Your injury sounds very unpleasant, plenty enough to trigger a flare of PMR. My early PMR pains were in the groin area and very disabling.
I tend to think that if my pains are not bilateral they are unlikely to be directly due to PMR. Prednisalone will help but as it deals with the inflammation it may mask the investigations into further damage. Ideally your doctor maybe prepared to refer you directly to the hospital who will fast track you through the tests. This happened to me recently in the U.K. and I practically had the department to myself due to the primary care referral.
hi, I’m in the same state, I injured my “good” hip twisting to get a crutch for for other hip, ( I’ve had loads of operations on that one, hip replacement kept going wrong, 7 ops so far) any way I’ve now hurt my good hip and the pain is in the groin, no breqk on X-ray but I’m in agony and can’t walk.
2013 Mayo, I sympathize completely. It's such pervasive pain; impossible to ignore.
I live in a rural are in Canada and haven't summoned up the strength to go to the local clinic which couldn't even offer x-ray services when I had my fall. It's an ordeal I can't face at the moment.
Clearly the fall has damaged some tissues. Infections can set in. Steroids suppress the immune system, making it harder to keep the bugs at bay while repairing the injury. Your doctor should closely monitor your recovery. Increasing your dose of prednisolone will not fight an infection.
Thanks. I will present at the small local clinic tomorrow and hope someone can figure it out. I could handle the broken ribs better if I could walk without a walker, but we don’t get to choose our injuries or health issues, do we?!
sorry about that! I would hate to steer you wrong. As well, I never had PMR, only GCA and their prednisone requirements are vastly different. I hope that you can get some relief very soon and that your medical team will figure out what’s going on. My best to you.
