I wrote about two weeks ago about my back pain. As was discussed I increased my dose to 6mg from 4mg , it did not help so decided I needed to see a doctor.
Of course these days they are a rare species that you need a crystal ball to make an appointment with sometime in the future.
However I saw a practice nurse who was very thorough and diagnosed a flair of Divaticulosis and a UTI. She gave me a five day course of antibiotics which did improve things but the back pain did not go away.
She said to come back if it didn’t improve so I rang the surgery and made another appointment but it was with another nurse. She has decided to check out other possibilities and did a thorough examination. Now I have to do a stool test at home to rule things out. Fingers crossed it isn’t what she was hinting at .
I was surprised she didn’t give me more antibiotics but I will put up with the pain and see what develops.
Thank you for listening

What is it with nurses prescribing antibiotics for 3 days (me) and 5 days? They don't even work until day 5, a doc told me. I got prescribed 3 days at the beginning of 2023 and the UTI got worse, set itself into the bladder wall and I got 15 occurrences in 2024. Now I have had to take prophylactic antibiotics since Feb.
That isn't true - they start to work immediately and you typically feel the benefit in terms of symptoms in 2-3 days but then it depends what abx and what for. They probably said that to make sure you took the whole course. The normal course for certain antibiotics is 3 days (trimethoprine for example) while other things may need 2 weeks.
I hope you get a satisfactory answer soon and that the problem can be sorted out without too much trouble.
If the pain persists, don’t let it drift, insist on seeing a GP. Hopefully it won’t come to that as the nurses (particularly the second one) sound efficient x
Thank you for your well wishes . Yes I will keep on top of the situation and not let it slide. I can’t fault the nurses they were very caring and it was obvious that they were trying their best to get to the bottom of it.
