UTI infection

I have a UTI infection and so far two antibiotics have not worked, and I am allergic to most other kinds. I assume this shows how my immune system is not working well now thanks to prednisone and Kevzara and that an infection is what will finish me off rather than the PMR. Also having a temporal biopsy tomorrow. So this is a rather anxiety-provoking week.

Hello and welcome. sorry, but I’ve got a load of questions and the answers will help people reply meaningfully. Could you give us some information such as diagnosis, when it was, symptoms, dose of Pred at the start, what it is now and what your symptoms are like on steroids. It really helps and especially if you put it in your bio.

Regards your UTI. Has it been diagnosed by being sent to the lab for culture? If so, what are the organisms and did they check for antibiotic sensitivity? Has it been evident just while on Pred or from pre-diagnosis? What are you symptoms?

Same questions as Snazzy - but I have another: were you told to stop the Kevzara while taking the abx? I am on Actemra which is similar to Kevzara and was told to stop it when I had a UTI.

I get quite a few - well the cystitis symptoms anyway. I take Mannose-D at the first twinge. It is better than my response to antibiotics. Good luck with the biopsy. My concern would be the accuracy if I was on Prednisalone.

I love D-mannose! D-mannose is a naturally occurring simple sugar, related to glucose and can be found in many foods including cranberries, oranges, tomatoes, blueberries, and even seaweed

It “sticks to” E-coli and research shows it may keep E-coli from attaching to the urinary tract. I was resistant to 3 antibiotics during my UTI just prior to my biopsy and resulting GCA diagnosis. It stopped my symptoms and I now take it at the first hint of a UTI, even while on Prednisone and Actemra. The pharmacist who dispensed my Actemra assured me there was no interaction with Actemra, so I was free to continue. I had no problem.

Here is the dosage of D-mannose powder I used (it also comes in pill form, so you would have to check on dosage for pills):

For treatment: 1.5 gram (in ½ cup water) 2 times/day for 3 days, then, 1 gram once a day for 10 days

For maintainance: 2 gram/day

Hope this is of some help to you and best wishes on your biopsy. You are so fortunate to have found this site, as it will be a WEALTH of knowledge and everyone is so quick to answer your questions. . .
