I had a bout of oral thrush a few months ago, never having had it before, GP said it was associated with taking steroids. I seem to have it down below now, (also after two courses of antibiotics, and, I suspect, the long term use of steroids). Any of you ladies familiar with this? Bought some Canesten, but information states age range stops at 60 — slightly nervous about using it, last time in my twenties! Advice please, and thank you so much....

Thrush
Hi, bitp, thrush the bane of my life. Nystatin for throat , I take fluconazole which isn't ideal and you need to check with the pharmacist says it ok. I have diabetes and am on pred and a steroid sparer. I even have canestan, on my feet which mistakenly thought was dry skin for years.
The usual home remedies are cut all sugar and yeast (mushrooms too...a fungi) from your diet. This can be hard for me at first as it seems like the Trish s teams to be fed I use a warm salt water gargle several times a day, check stools for tissue type material this will confirm you are infected inside and out so to speak. Buy a really cheap bag of toothbrushes and replace daily until it goes. It feels a waste but I found washing the brush in bleach didn't work for me.
I try and eat as much prebiotic food and probiotic foods. These will hopefully help replenish the good bacteria. I am afraid a friend of mine ended up have a 6 week dose of fluconazole for vaginal thrush. Fingers crossed you can get control of the infection.
Thanks Poopadoop, I did check with chemist and she said it was ok to take as a one off, but it did concern me that the age range was up to 60!
Nothing like making you feel better is there....apparently they like the Dr to confirm its thrush as over 60 it might be a different issue. Another one of those drugs that knows when your birthday is!
As the Pharmacist says, it’s OK for a one off but if it persists, it’d best to have a swab taken to be 100% sure.
I had Oral Thrush after Chemo that lasted 18months or so, the GP threw everything at it but it was persistent.......
Good Luck 🍀
That possibly means it wasn't tested in an older age group. Of course, it may even not have been tested in women at all ...
Joking aside - it needs confirmation by a doctor that is is a banal thrush infection.
You might find that using probiotics would help - #vsl3 comes highly recommended by an NHS GI consultant, pricey but does work.
Haven't the Doctors given you a antifungal oral medication on prescription.
You do need one , especially as it is a number of places .
It is similar to the Canesten single dose tablet.
You can find an increase in Thrush because of the change in sugars in your system on steroids.
A good thing to do at the moment is drink alot , eat probiotic yoghurt , swill your mouth out and drink green tea at the end of a meal.
Begin a low sugar , low carb diet , and until the Thrush has cleared in your mouth keep of yeast and fungi foods.
