Good news on bones

Having been on pred for 2.5 years i was a bit apprehensive when i got my DEXA scan results. I’d been diagnosed about 9 years ago with osteoporosis following a coeliac diagnosis but didn’t want to take Bisphophonates so worked hard at exercise and took calcium and vit d. By My next DEXA 3 years later I’d managed to get out of the osteoporotic range and into the osteopoenic but being put on pred was a worry . However I’ve kept up the Pilates and walk as much as I can during the past few years and was thrilled when my GP told me yesterday that I’m osteopoenic and have managed to maintain the density as it was pre PMR. I wanted to share this with you as I know many of you do worry about this. And I’ve so appreciated all the advice here.

If you can maintain bone density with pred - pretty much anyone can! Well done.

I hope so but it won’t work for everyone I realise. However I want people to make sure they ask for the DEXA and make informed choices before taking these drugs which are after all quite intense and can have nasty side effects.

That's great Casia. Just goes to show how having the Dexa scan is crucial before jumping on the drugs bandwagon often suggested as essential for accompanying pred. I am sure others will be encouraged by your example.

So true Marilyn and really important to take some responsibility for your own health by ensuring as much as you can that any drug is essential.

That's great news. The drs often present constant loss as a done deal. It just shows that it's not the case. With the right info and determination it's totally possible to manage it.🎖️

I agree Poopadoop though there are of course genetic factors which can go against you. I always think it’s really important to research any drug before you take it and try your hardest not to take it without questioning and making sure there’s no alternative.

Thank you...very good to know...I'm awaiting DEXA results. But good to know that increasing density is achievable with other means.

That's great news Casia! If you happen to read my reply to SPINAL FRACTURES: PAIN IN THE RIBS you'll see how topical your post was for me.😁

Hello! Yes, I read it and glad that you’ve managed to improve your bone health too without the dreaded Bisphophonates . There’s a website that I get tips from which is worth having a look at: saveourbones.com

Good luck and keep up the resistance!
