I have had a slightly raised calcium level for more than 20 years. Consultant is not perturbed, as it never 'spikes' and is tested regularly. I do not take calcium along with Pred for the above reason. I understand that vit K2 helps to put calcium into bones and not leave it in blood vessels etc. When I asked my Dr, he said he could not prescribe it, as NICE have not approved it but he seemed happy for me to purchase a supplement myself. Has anyone any experience of this?. My Dexa scan was VG.
Does anyone take Vit K2 to help with bones? - PMRGCAuk
Does anyone take Vit K2 to help with bones?
Yes my husband takes it just as a precaution no idea how true it is or works but meant to stop calcium plaques in arteries and our doctor said yes go ahead hope this helps
I take vit K2 for the reasons you give. I buy my own for the reasoning you give. I find Heron very, very good on bone health. You may wish to look at her posts on the subject. I have refused Alendronic Acid and similar and try to take the appropriate supplements and have a calcium rich diet.
Many on here take Vitamin K2 Mk alongside their calcium supplements-but not prescribed .
Plenty of choice online and in health shops/chemists.
I take Vit K2.
It is a supplement so not prescribable - vit D is one of the very few along with vit B12. HeronNS is the proponent for vit K2 and has researched it widely.
I take it on the grounds that: some people think it will get the Ca to the right place, which is a huge bonus; it's not going to do any harm; and it's very cheap!
I take it with my vitamin D and calcium. My dexa scan improved. I also do not take it close to my prednisone. Take one dose at lunch and one dose at dinner.
My GP and my pharmacist hadn't even heard of it. So I went ahead anyway and bought some K2 based on the advice on here and research online. I have taken it daily since starting on calcium.
instead of supplements you could try natural sources. Fermented soybeans

is very rich in K2 ,could be found in Japanese deli. Taste may be hard to get use to at first, but some spicy mustard covers it well.
I’ve asked various medics (doctors and others) about K2 they just shrug their shoulders. If it’s so good for ‘directing’ calcium to where it’s needed and away from where it’s not, why do those in the medical profession know so little about K2. That’s what concerns me.
Yes, I too have wondered about their lack of knowledge. However, when I realise how little my GP surgery knows about PMR, which is something they must come across quite frequently, perhaps I shouldn't be surprised. For those that are interested in this subject there is a book called 'Vit K2 and the Calcium Paradox.'. A Canadian author, her science is quite compelling.
I take a small amount of vit K2 supplement which is from natural sources (fermented chickpeas) as a top up but I also make kefir which has some K2 and also your body will make some from vit K if you eat plenty of spinach etc. Like all these things it is most likely to help if your diet is insufficient which I suspect probably doesn't apply to most of us - but no harm in trying
For several years now ( PMR )I have been taking a combined capsule of K2 120 mcg and Vit D 3 1000 iu available as a supplement OTC .
I was on the normal calcium/vitamin D but was getting an irritated bladder. On advice on this site I now take a 400.g vitamin D and a K2 tablet together and no calcium. To be honest I don't know if this helps with bones but my bladder irritation has gone but I have no idea if k2 and vitamin D makes a difference. I suspect you would have to take it long term for any measurable difference. The good news is I have no bad side effects which I count as a victory..😀
Yes. I take K2(MK7). I buy it over the counter. HeronNS posted a really good link on K2.
My rheumatologist has me on D3 and K2
