Hello everyone,

So I've been having pelvic floor physiotherapy for an overly tight pelvic floor/vaginismus for about a month now and I have seen some improvement and less pain. But I was wondering how long it takes to see a bigger change? Does anyone else have a specific time frame or is this more of an individual thing?

Hi Bubble_by,

Pelvic floor physiotherapy is very individual. Some people respond quickly while for others it can be 6 months +. I went for just over a year but we also tried out other forms of physiotherapy as the 3 conditions had weakened my core muscles. I would definitely recommend going at your own pace and remembering that sometimes you will make big gains and other times take two steps back. Illnesses the recovery isn’t linear and the same is for pelvic pain and it’s treatments. I personally think having pelvic rehab or physiotherapy is a very brave thing to do as it’s very invasive and you need to have confidence in the person treating you but also have confidence that you will improve - which you will. If you have any other questions just shout and I will do my best to answer the question or someone else on here will be able to answer it 😊

Alaine1 - best response to this so so so true. ✨🙏🏽

It takes courage and it takes self discovery. With much patience. And it’s worth it. I learned so much about myself, how strong and how powerful I am - by my illness. I learn to take some things less seriously yet also embrace my recovery as my responsibility. No one can do it for me. This site has helped with that sense of ownership and autonomy immensely.

While I have had pelvic symptoms mostly all of my life, it took a long time for things to progress to their worst and for me to even realize that what I was experiencing was not only diagnosable but also treatable.

Having a community like this one has helped me overcome my fear of pelvic PT, and overcome my grief of feeling pain in such a sensitive area. It’s not ‘perfect’ but I am now more aware of my strengths and limits and more importantly my progress through my treatment plan and through PT.

It took a year and a half for me...3 steps forward and one step backwards... But emotionally and physically supportive

This group has made me realize how variable pelvic pain issues are. I believe mine was a long time in the making - just from holding tension in my pelvis, then a bad case of c diff. It seemed like it would never get better, so after almost two years of doctors, I started seeing a pelvic pain physical therapist. There are good days and not so good days, but I’m better with her guidance and I’m hopeful that one day, I won’t think about it at all. Deep breathing, watching my diet, walking every day and a few other things I’ve added to my daily routine, have made major differences. I don’t think there’s a specific timeline for this, but I understand that we must keep asking questions, sharing and experimenting, to see what gives us some relief.I wish you well on your journey to heal.

Took 6 mths for me to see any real change. And then 2+ more years for me to be pain free the majority of the time.

Hi lalab, how did the frequency of your visits change during the additional two years of maintenance - if you are comfortable talking about that?

For the first couple of months I was going 2 times a week. Then I went once a week for another 4 mths. My 1st PT discharged me after 6 mths telling me there was nothing further she could do. I started looking for another PT, but it took maybe 4 mths to find someone. So, during those 4 mths, things got worse again (they were never fully good after the 1st PT).

I started seeing the new PT once a week, and I'd say after that first year of weekly visits I started spacing them further apart. By the end (this past March) I was going once every 6 weeks or so.

My muscles were pretty stubborn. And I'd been suffering for years before I finally had a diagnosis and started PT.

I don't know that my situation is that 'typical'.

Hope that helps!
