ursodeoxycholic acid

hi everyone, Hope your all well. I’ve had pbc for about a year now. I take 500mg of ursodeoxycholic acid twice per day. I suffer from waves of nausea at different times throughout the day. Today I spoke to Gastroenterologist on the phone and he told me to take the medication 1000mg at bedtime. Does anyone else take their medication altogether? Thanks

For 23 years I have taken 750mg Urso after breakfast with no side effects. This has worked well for me but we are all different and it may not for you. I feel you should take it after food and I don`t eat before going to bed. I hope you can find the best way for you.

I was only diagnosed in January with PBC and I started on Urso straight away. My specialist said to take 500 mg in both the morning and evening for a month to see if I could tolerate it and to see side effects. After a month, if it worked better with lifestyle timings you could switch to 1000 mg in one go in the evening or morning. I did get some nausea to begin with but it’s gone. But you have to take it at exactly the same time every day.

thankyou, I work shifts so it may be I have to take them at different times. I think I’m going to take them at bedtime and hopefully sleep through the nausea.

My Dr did say if you have any side effects taking it as a whole dose at night did mean that by morning you could be over the worse of it, hope you feel better soon

Yes, I take 1000mg with my evening meal. Sometimes I get the URSO repeat which is most unpleasant but I find taking it with food and water reduces that likelihood. If the specialist has recommended just before bedtime and if you still have a problem with nausea you might like to try taking the URSO just before bedtime but with one dry biscuit/cracker. At least you will sleep through any nausea. I was told quite some time back that any medication which is an acid (Folic Acid, Ursodeoxycholic Acid etc) is best taken with food.

You can also have a chat with your pharmacist, if youtake other medication they may be able to suggest a better regimen for you.

best wishes

thankyou for your reply. I’m going to try taking them at bedtime, as I work shifts this changes weekly but hopefully I’ll sleep through the nausea. Thanks again

Changing dosage and timing can be fine but for some people it can hit the body hard.My partner accidentally double dosed on Urso and it put her in hospital (sick, passed out, incoherent).

Moving to an evening 1000mg might put your nausea away from daytime and hopefully nothing other than that but Id suggest to make sure to have someone around when you change.

I take 1800 mg at night just before going to bed. No issues for the most part - it was recommended since I’d forget to take 2 pills 3x a day.

Hi there, I've had PBC for a few years now, and I take 1250mg of Urso at night before bed. I take two 500mg tablets, and I take 2.5 mg of liquid Urso as a top up.

I find a little something on my tummy before I take it helps . In the early days if I took it on an empty tummy I got diarrhea. Maybe you could ask for the liqiud version , may help with easier absorption.

I take 1200 mg/day and split it into 3 doses (8 tablets) at meal times. No problems with nausea ever.

I had problems when I first started taking it. Used to feel dizzy / light-headed and felt a bit sick. Having food before or at time of taking them defo helps. It did all settle down.I have considered taking my whole dosage at once as I am very forgetful of the evening dose. Good to know everyone is different and no harm in trying. x

I’ve tried many combinations over the years, but find I’am more compliant if I take it after my main meal in the evening that’s the time of the day I’am mostly at home. I tried bedtime but on an empty stomach I always wake up, with reflux so not good for me.

I think what fits your lifestyle and what’ time of day gives you the best compliance and the least side effects is the way to go. I had no issues in trying various combinations still do sometimes, if I’am on holiday and my routine changes for example.

I take 1250 mg per day, 750 mg in the morning and 500 mg in the evening before bed. If I took it all at once it would definitely cause problems - stomache distress, raw bottom, etc. I’ve recently started taking fenofibrate with the Urso to try and bring liver function numbers down. So far so good.

i forget my evening dose a lot and my doctor said I could take it all at once. Don’t they suggest taking it with food, though? Maybe that would help w the nausea.

Hi,

I had nausea when I first started Urso but it went away after about a year. I always take the Urso with food --usually after my meal or snack. I take 500mg 2 X per day. When the nausea was very bad for me the first year I took CBD oil once per day. It really helped me through until the nausea went away. I've stopped the CBD oil because it's no longer needed.
