Does anyone on here take zetia or ezetimibe for cholesterol? I cannot tolerate the pain that statins cause and my cholesterol has gone up since I have been off Lipitor.

Hi Pamela4475 I see no one with personal experience has been able to chip in here. If you use the search panel on the top right handside of this page it will link you to previous posts but in other parts of Health Unlocked.

hope you find an answer

Luckily I don't need treatment foe cholesterol now, but years ago gave up statins, like you, because of pain and also because I was prescribed them before I changed my diet. Sorry if this is a daft question, but do you just have raised blood cholesterol? I understand that in PBC this can be high while still not posing an increased risk for atherosclerosis. I was just wondering if you know for certain that you do need zetia or ezetimibe.

Best wishes, and I'm sure someone who knows about these will soon answer more helpfully than I can!

I’m a RN if 30 years and I’ve discussed my totals with md including good and bad levels and yes it would be beneficial.... statins are drug of choice but I have tried all of them with pain so one that works with intestine is my only choice but I appreciate the reply.... I hope it’s not leading to another disease but had high levels before once and nrh

I'm very sorry. It's bad enough when things go awry without having to fear the drugs may be worse than the illness - I've been there a few times. I hope it turns out to be nothing serious. It must be especially upsetting when you have spent your whole working life caring kindly for others. Please be kind to yourself now. Keep us informed.

I read somewhere that people who suffer pain when taking statins are better on Pravastatin. I don’t remember where I read it. I just jotted it down because my father had horrendous trouble on the statins he was taking.

It’s another statin.... can’t take statins 😞

I take simvastatin but I have heard from a reliable medical source, Pravastatin doesn’t cause muscle inflammation.

Apparently it’s genetic if you get pain or not.

My brother and my mother both have pain with statins too

If I were told I need to take a cholesterol medication again or die tomorrow, I would start saying my goodbyes. I never knew how bad they made me feel until they took me off them in January 2017 after my “liver” journey started in June of 2016 (I took Lipitor for 8+ years. Crestor was the last one taken for a short time that put my liver levels high). When my gastroenterologist told me I could go back on them 9 months later, I said no thanks. My leg cramps, joints, snarled fingers , knuckles returned to normal within a month of discontinuing the cholesterol meds. It is the most over prescribed medication there is. Last month my new GP shook my hand after he asked if I was on cholesterol medication and I said no...never again. He said good for you. There are new statistics as to the effectiveness of statin drugs versus heart attack prevention. I’m 70...if I should stroke out today, it’s fine. I just want it to be a good one that wipes me out.

Pamela4475...I’m in Tyler, TX. I thought there was no one here with pbc until I met with a hepatologist. He said there’s is a cluster of it in Tyler. Thanks to HIPPA, we can’t find out who they are. 😊

True.... next time I pass through Tyler we can get a tea or coffee ☕️

Miamomomma...I understand your reluctance to take statins. However, aside from the bad effects you experienced, they have now been proven to be antiflammatory, anti fibrotic & anti cancer where the liver is concerned. 😊

That’s too bad bc the pain is so bad I can barely wash my face.... the muscle pain affects my everyday living 😞

That is bad. Mine has not had that affect on me. We are all so unique 😊

There are other cholesterol lowering meds to try besides statins. Your doctor can help you find something that works for you.

Ok everyone..... about the ezetimibe... liver spec was out sick on my appt so his brother the other liver spec but on transplant team said he would leave it up to my general internal Ned doc to prescribe..... didn’t see that it would be if harm as it works in the colon to reduce the cholesterol.... so don’t see him til end of March.... will keep you all posted 😘
