hello, I've just picked up my urso and the brand seems to have changed. I used to Ursofalk 500mg and now it's Cholurso 500mg. I asked pharmacist about it and was told this is a generic brand now and not the original makers of urso and it is cheaper for nhs and should not affect me in any other way. Have others noticed a change when moving to a generic brand of urso? I'm a non-responder to urso but been told to continue to take it as well as Obeticholic acid
Generic brand of urso: hello, I've just... - PBC Foundation
Generic brand of urso
I haven't noticed a change in the brand name but I have done well with the urso.
I'm in the USA, so, don't know if this applies to the UK or other countries. The brand name for Urso is considered Forte Urso, which is very expensive. I've been using from the start, a generic brand called Actavis. I tolerated it well and wanted to stay with it, and not being switched to other generic brands. To do that, I asked my doctor to add a note on the prescription (in my case): "fill with the Actavis brand only". With this note on the prescription, the pharmacy, guarantees that I get Actavis every time. I've been on Urso for 2 years and always have gotten Actavis. If the prescription doesn't contain the instruction, the pharmacy uses what ever generic brand of Urso they have in stock.
I have been on cholurso since diagnosis (Jan 2018) and have had no problem with them. Bloods in August all back to within normal range except one but that was only slightly high. I take 3 x 250 p/day and they have been easy to take.
I take the ursofalk brand 250mg x4 a day I’ve just put in for a new prescription so hopefully I get the same ones, I’ll let you know if they change.
Did you use a different pharmacy?
I noticed a couple of years ago if I go to boots I get ursofalk, but if I go the the pharmacy attached to my surgery I get a generic brand dispensed in bottles. I never noticed a difference taking them but I never go there now as I prefer my tablets in the blister packs, there easier to carry in your bag if your going out or away from home.
I’ve read posts where people report a problem due to the fillers which I think could be possible however, the active medication is the same in a generic or branded form.
Thank you. It’s same pharmacy and I was told when I queried it with pharmacy that gp had requested generic brand as it’s cheaper and if I don’t get on with it, then to specifically ask for ursofalk
I started on a generic brand and I was very sick so stopped taking Urso then the doctors persuaded me to try again. I was given Ursofalk this time and I wasn’t sick so I always request Ursofalk now. It could of just been a coincidence but I’m not risking it.
Thank you. I’ve not had any problems with ursofalk but been told I’m a non responder and so that’s why I’m also on obetacholic acid
Have they explained why you are on URSO if you are a non responder. I have been on Ursofalk for around 8years and respond well (according to my consultant) I have on occasion been given an alternative and apart from one bout of D & Sickness which could have been coincidence have been fine. All down to NHS costs but question still remains why you are taking it. Would be interested to know. Keep well
I think my Pharmacy just puts me on the cheapest at the time. I have been on Ursofalk for ages but I have just been changed can't remember the name but the capsules are now bright orange. Hopefully I will be able to tolerate them.
Let me know how you do on capsules. I had a bad reaction & my dr wouldn’t even try the pill. Hope you have no problems 😊
Thank you for your response. What kind of reaction did you have?
I did notice a difference when I was given a generic URSO instead of my usual Ursofalk. I can’t really explain the difference, I just felt unwell and the Urso was the only change I could think of. I asked my doctor to name Ursofalk on my next prescription and when I was back on ursofalk I felt much better.
Since then I have always written Ursofalk on my repeat prescriptions.
