I'm afraid I don't know anything about PSC, only PBC. Maybe others will answer you who know better. However, Urso is the main and longest used treatment for PBC and does save lives. Before the use of Urso, people basically just died of PBC, now they generally survive and live out their lives in full and die of something else. For those who have problems with urso, the recent development of Ocaliva has helped, but even this has to be used in conjunction with urso.
But, I am only talking of PBC, so apologies if this is not relevant. I don't know if the advisors at the 'PBC Foundation' (link to their site at top of page) can give you advice, or maybe check the BLT (British Liver Trust) site. However, until you have your medication formally sorted out, I personally would not try alternative methods.
Hi Roccadave, I have PBC and have been taking Urso for 5 years. I cannot take Tumeric as it causes pain in my back. I don't think my bile ducts like it, maybe it's working to clear them or something. I note that you have not got PBC so it maybe fine for you, it's good stuff. Kandypat
im not on the urso yet, but have been taking the tumeric supplement. its hard to tell if theres a diff for me, but its good for so many things, i wanted to add it in anyways
I have just found your post under a general search for 'turmeric'. I was diagnosed with PBC a year ago and doing okay on URSO. My most annoying symptom is joint pain which I have now had daily for about 3 months since I was taken off steroids for AIH overlap (which they are not sure I actually have). Anyway, I have just started taking some fairly expensive turmeric capsules today to try and help with this pain. I was wondering how you are getting on with it? Have you had any further improvements with your joint pains? Hope you are keeping well generally.
Regarding Turmeric, I know people that have found it helpful with joint inflammation. One thing that concerns me is that there are contraindications found for those with gallstones and or bile duct dysfunction.
Also it can reduced platelets. None of this is meant to say that PBC patients should not use it.
I have an open mind to non- Pharma remedies etc. One of the sources I personally trust for objective views on herbs, supplements is Dr Andrew Weil. He was one of the first "western " dr that showed efficacy of and advocated for alternative medicine approaches.
Just the same, the web is full of pages touting Turmeric for liver. We each have to evaluate and decide- hopefully along with our good trusted health care partners.
