I am wanting to have my hair highlighted for my forthcoming holiday. I take budesonide 6mg and 50mg as a and 1000ml urso a day. Is it safe?
Can you highlight your hair if diagnosed wi... - PBC Foundation
Can you highlight your hair if diagnosed with aih/pbc overlap?
My personal opinion without any input from doctors is yes. The highlights are different from a single process coloring as it is brushed on to your hair vs the coloring goes on your scalp and possibly gets absorb into your body.
Hi Briggo
I too have been diagnosed with AIH/PBC overlap and take steroids, immunosuppressants and Urso. I've been dying and highlighting my hair for years before diagnosis (PBC 2015 & AIH 2017) and since. I do notice my hair has got a lot finer and have put that down to the side effects of the medication.
I don't get the dye applied to the scalp as the hairdresser uses foils. I made my hairdresser aware of my liver diseases and she is very careful not to touch my scalp.
My consultant has told me avoid certain things but has never mentioned hair dye. Don' know what I would do if I had to stop dying my hair 😞.
Hope this helps you come to a decision. Enjoy ur holiday 😎.

I asked my hep that very question last week and she said yes
I dont know about aih/pbc i only have pbc you should ask your doctor
hi briggo
i have pbc but not overlap... so not same diagnosis... but ive suffered with pbc for 19 years and last year had a transplant... in all this time I have had a colour put on my hair 2/3 times a year
on some occasions highlights... ive never had a bad reaction but always did skin tests a few days before and have stuck to the same make if dye..
ive read in the past that dye might have thought to have been implicated as a trigger for pbc... but for me personally ive only used dye for special occasions and since ive started to go grey... so i not before pbc rearing its head.
everyone is different... but most importantly get a skin test and hopefully all will be good. best wishes cazer
Of course. Looking after yourself is important!
I have PBC and get my hair dyed and highlights monthly. My dr says it’s fine. My numbers have not gone up at all from getting my hair processed. Yet they will go up if I cheat on my normally healthy diet.
