I have not read anywhere that if you have pbc you can't sunbath,as long as you adhere to the guidelines of protecting you skin .

Thanks for your reply. I was just concerned with regard to the azathioprine medication I take and whether anyone has had any side effects after sun exposure.

Hi,

I wrote a post about PBC and sun exposure a couple of days ago. I think it will give you an idea if you read some of the comments there.

I have PBC, and sun exposure gives me a very bad rash, and itching that lasts for days. Sun screen helps, but not completely, so now I wear long sleeves, and protective clothing when out in sunny weather. Very unfortunate but I'd rather cover up than suffer the consequences. Having said that, it's very different from one person to the other. Not everybody suffers after sun bathing or sun exposure.

Aza can make you more sensitive to the sun , I never burn in England but since aza just walking around in uk in the sun and I go a lovely red colour 🙄use at least factor 50 and check skin as one of the side effects listed for aza is more risk of skin cancers x

Hi Briggo

I've been diagnosed with PBC/AIH overlap and was firstly given Azathioprine but it didn't agree with me so was prescribed Mercaptopurine which is similar to Azathioprine. For both these medicines I was told by my Consultant to stay out of strong sun and wear suncream even on overcast days as the medication makes us more prone to skin cancer.

Check the leaflet that's supplied with your Azathioprine or speak to your Pharmacist, Consultant or GP to confirm.

I saw an article few days ago regarding the sunscreen we should use. It said we should use zinc based and not regular sunscreen because it can damage liver. For whatever that’s worth😊

I echo your words gwillistexas. My dermatologist told me to stay away from regular sunscreen because it's heavy on the liver and to stick to zinc based one. The fewer the ingredients, the better. Here in the US, I find that Badger brand is a good one and not very white or sticky, even though it's a pain to even out on the skin...
