Anyone experiencing constipation while taking ursodiol?

Hello all. I've been newly diagnosed with PBC. I'm also dealing with breast cancer at the moment. I was put on 300mg ursodiol three times daily, & have been taking for 2 weeks. I was concerned I'd have intestinal issues taking this medication, but it's been the opposite. It's causing constipation instead. I never had an issue with this before as my diet is healthy. I'm wondering if anyone else had this issue with ursodiol? If anyone has any advice I'd greatly appreciate it!

This site has been a God send!

Thank you!

This is from the Mayo Clinic on possible side effects of urso and constipation is on list. Try to drink more water & eat more fiber: fruits, vegetables, oatmeal etc. That will help.

Sorry you are going through so much right now. Stay strong & this group is here for you.

Thank you very much! This group has been incredible & im so grateful it's out there! While there's loads of info/support for breast cancer (& lupus, which I was diagnosed in 2005) there's very little on PBC. It makes such a difference knowing your not alone.

Take care of yourself!

Hi and welcome, I was diagnosed in 2006 and seem to have periods when I am constipated even though I have a high fiber, high vegetable diet. I find that salad usually sorts that out for me or I use Lactulose.

best wishes

I only have constipation if I take codeine for pain relief...then I take lactulose..a small dose and it works very well. I have to take it if constipated for more than two days as I have cirhossis now.

You have a lot to deal with, so the very best.

Hi.

Taking into account the health problems that you have but also the need to take the medication, I also believe that you should drink more liquids, ingest more fibers and, if possible, avoid laxatives.

You need, above all, relax. The body needs also to adapt to the new medication. The initial phase of knowledge of PCB generates a great stress but you will see that, over time, you will almost forget that you have this news condition (not forgetting the medication, of course).

Greetings

I was taking Metamucil 1X per day to counteract constipation but after going gluten free I've found I no longer need it.

Since starting Urso in a January, I too have been constipated. I drink plenty of water eat fruits and veggies and after 3 days of not going, I take senna plus 4 tablets and I finally have relief. It’s such a miserable feeling when you have this problem but it can be dealt with.

I had been constipated before urso (started 2 weeks ago), since the medication my bowel movement has been improved that becoming regular.
