Has anyone else had a blood transfusion in the past, nothing sinister just a thought passing through my fuddled brain :o)
Blood Transfusion: Has anyone else had a... - PBC Foundation
Blood Transfusion
HI. I've had a few. Whats your question..
Yip. I have had a couple. Likewise, what do you need to know?
Yes, at time of diagnosis before liver biopsy as low iron.
Hello Dollydaydream
I had 4 blood transfusions after a bad bleed from my stomach varices 3 years ago. I had PBC and since have had a liver transplant.
Yes I have had a blood transfusion in 1993 after my son was born
Yes, I had blood transfusion after surgery and approx 7 years before I was diagnosed with PBC, however, my consultant said I probably had PBC then as my LFT was "off" when she checked my records.
Oh so they can check back then?.
The thoughts that were going through my mind ( and can I add Just through my mind, I am not trying to say or claim any of this is correct )
I had 4 pints in 1994 after a haemorrhage through fibroids, within a week they tried to shove another pint in and then operated. I have always felt ill since having this opp, not on top of the world, I have always blamed the hysterectomy and my GP has always said you cant blame it for everything, but am now wondering if it was something to do with the transfusion, If i can't give blood because i have PBC ( why ) and how do I know I haven't received any off someone with PBC, I will try and get all my blood results from that time if I can.
I was also once asked by a consultant if I had had any transfusions but didn't think any more about it at the time.
I have not had any blood transfusions so that is not the reason for my pbc
Yes. I had a blood transfusion when I was born and again 15 years ago when I had my son. Was a diagnosed with PBC over 3 years ago.
Hi, After my TX I developed a blood leak from the liver. Over a 10 day stay in hospital I had 5 pints due to the fact my blood count had dropped to 3.5
Gosh you were lucky you were already in the hospital, I wasn't but my best friend dragged me to the doctors as i could hardly stand and i was in an ambulance and on a drip before i knew what was going on. I am very grateful to them as they told me, if they let me go home to sort things as i asked to that i would not be coming back, I thought he was being nasty but he meant i would be dead.
I could not take the 5th pint they tried to put in as I was going hyper.
Pleased to hear you got through it okay :o))
Being honest, that day I had an appointment with the dietician nurse. I actually collasped by the main entrance of the hospital. What should have been a 40minute appointment turned out to be 10 days.
Years ago I worked in a Haematology lab. One of our tasks was to prepare blood for transfusions. I can tell you without any hesitation that everything is done to make sure you receive the correct blood type and a healthy transfusion too. Often when Iron is low they just transfuse the red cells. What happens when blood is stored it separates out, the red cells sink down and the plasma rises, a bit like cream on milk. Then you can see if the plasma is a healthy colour and doesn't have any Bilirubin which comes from several diseases including Liver Disease. The blood is centrifuged, a machine a bit like a washing machine on fast spin cycle, and the plasma is taken off. It is very rare to get blood that is not healthy. A big disaster in the lab if that happens. I would say that it is other reasons than the transfusion which would make you feel unwell. The new blood doesn't stay long in your system, it gets used up and replaced by your own new blood.
