Anyone have anxiety after starting high dose of iron pills. I already take b12 injections every 12 weeks. Potassium levels are in the range too. My recent Folate level is 8.8 ug/l. Took supplement for 3 months last year as it was low too. Ferritin is 59 ug/l . But i have a feeling ferritin will drop after my b12 injection causing shortness of breath and palipitations. At first i thought pottassium and got it checked and in range. And my magnesium levels are good too . I always have loads of coconut water and banana just in case if my pottassium levels are dropping after the injection. Looks like quality of life is a lot better before starting b12 injections. It’s been more than a year ,still tough to understand what is going on.

I find it very difficult to get my ferritin levels out of that 45-60 range too even tho I eat suitable food, including 2 lots of black pudding a week ( liver makes me wretch). I used high dose ferrous fumarate for years, didn’t really work but gave me bad stomach pains, not anxiety though. It’s recommended to alternate taking such products one day to the next plus take vit C with it. I have tried a spray ferritin, and now take heme( 3 Arrows): a much more gentle product that doesn’t hurt my guts, and I think supporting my ferritin levels. It’s expensive compared to ferrous fumarate, so my doses are rather mean, some take 3 capsules a day ok. I have no idea why high dose ferritin would cause anxiety, bad guts yes, try splitting the dose up, is there anything else in tablet that doesn’t agree with you like a filler?
Hello Judithdalston thanks for the reply. I will try to take heme iron. I don’t have any reactions to anything before starting injections. Have used Ferrous fumarate pills during my pregnancy and was completely ok which was 3 years ago. Not sure what has changed now in the body and wondering what could be the cause of this anxiety issues suddenly
I have a number of chronic conditions and it’s always difficult and very slow to unpick what is causing what, whether the ailment itself or treatment for it. Had a 45 mins appointment yesterday with a very nice endo.in search to unpick high HR( andBP) from hypothyroidism ( 2 decades+)… and ‘age’ kept cropping up as a reason I am falling apart..cheek! From memory I did think a late pregnancy ( one twin birth) had a lot to account for in my change in all sort of hormones. Hope someone else will come along re anxiety, meanwhile consider heme perhaps.
This is a summary of what I have read up and found out about iron supplements over the past few years. I am not in any way medically trained. You are strongly encouraged to check every detail before making any decisions for yourself.
If you had or have neuro symptoms, I'd expect NHS to have you on B12 injections every 2 months.
Some links may have details that could be upsetting to read
Maybe search online for "BNF hydroxocobalamin" and look in section that discusses doses. It outlines treatment patterns for those with and without neuro symptoms.
Do you have a reference range for folate?
The result looks like it's probably within range but have you asked GP if you would benefit from taking a folate supplement with RDA (recommended daily amount). Local pharmacist may also be useful to talk to.
It's helpful if when you publish your results, you provide the reference ranges that were provided with them as it makes things easier to interpret. Ranges can vary between labs and methods.
When anaemic, then potassium can drop once your body starts producing more red cells. It's transitory. If you're not anaemic but deficient in, say, Iron [or B12/folate] then the potassium level is unlikely to fall as a result of replacement.
If your results are within the reference range, why would you seek to increase them? 'More' isn't always 'Better'.
