Advice required please re Active B12 level

Hi

I have popped over from the Thyroid Forum.

I have had my thyroid levels checked recently through Medichecks along with my Active B12

Vitamin B12 - Active 61.3 pmol/L 37.5 - 188 was reported by Medichecks as normal, but I know from Viapath recommend a MMA test if the level is 25 -70

Also my Folate is at the low end of the range, Folate - Serum 4.66 ug/L > 3.89

Ferritin 115 ug/L 13 - 150

Can anyone please advise if I should have the MMA test done and if so would my G.P. do it, or does it have to be done privately.

Thank you,

Viapath use a different assay with a different normal range. You cannot compare the two.

You could ask the GP for an MMA test. They will probably refuse because it's expensive and, in their eyes, unnecessary if you have a normal serum B12.

It can be done via the GP but I had a nightmare with mine to be honest due to GP and Hospital Phlebotomy Service lack of knowledge. Went in wrong tube 1st so waited a month for invalid result. Then too much bother for GP to contact Hospital Phlebotomy so redo so has to organise it my self and then waited another 3 weeks for a result. Blood test was outsourced to Viapath at St Thomas's Hospital anyway so if you have the finances it may be easier to have it done privately. Then there may be the issue of whether your GP actually understands the results and can provide treatment accordingly! I can only go on my own experience. Sorry I couldn't be more positive. I will send you the link for private blood test.

Private test that includes MMA.

Many thanks for your reply.

I am considering having the test through Viapath, just wondering who will do the blood draw as I do not think the G.P's surgery will do it.

Do you mind me asking what your results were and did you get treatment?

Best wishes.

Sorry for the supper slow reply. My result was 239 (0-280 nmol/L) so no action taken by GP. Have begun sublingual B12 spray as I know I am deficient in a range of vitamins so I am not absorbing them from by stomach/intestinal tract.

Did you have the test?
